Ravens Caw to Action

We celebrated a Ravens Victory Monday earlier this month in the best way possible; through a day filled with acts of service hosted by the Baltimore Ravens and United Way, The Ravens CAW TO ACTION! We welcomed nearly 20 community members and even some of the Ravens Cheerleaders to support our mission through various projects that both beautified the building and brought joy to our clients.

We started off with an exciting game of Bingo with Ravens swag as the number one prize (with some other teams mixed in) so the men could cheer on their favorite team in style! While some folks called the numbers, we had a small group help us with a “paint by numbers” mural in the vestibule sketched out by our talented resident artist. He first sketched the art on the walls and then labelled the colors that should be painted in. The area is now perfect for welcoming the hundreds of clients and thousands of volunteers who enter each year. Be sure to check out these murals the next time you visit us!

The Ravens Cheerleaders stopped by to meet everyone, getting pictures with the veterans in our program and even offering up a “LET’S GO RAVENS” cheer! They brought such a bright energy to such an already fun-filled day. We wrapped things up with a delicious lunch prepared by volunteers, giving everyone a chance to chat about life and get to know one another.

A huge thank you to United Way, the Ravens, and all of the amazing volunteers who came out to support our mission and respond to this year’s CAW TO ACTION!

A Trip to Camp Puh 'Tok

We packed our bags, loaded the bus, and headed up to Monkton, Maryland this month for our annual trip to Camp Puh ‘Tok! Each year we take time to escape the business of the city and slow down in the natural landscape, giving everyone the reset and recharge they need to stay well as we near the winter.

Being out in nature can be a great way to reset your bodies, but combining that with meditation and the comfort of comradery can further connect and refocus our minds. Nature Worx is a non-profit that brings people outside, teaching how to develop a relationship with the natural world, gain a fresh perspective on their lives and create a sense of connection to all living things. They came out to lead a program for the men this year, taking walks, meditating together and going through mindfulness exercises to the soothing sounds of birds and rustling leaves around them.

Meals are another change to “the normal” that always give us the opportunity to get creative in both planning and problem solving. The men are responsible for breakfast and lunch giving those who are “differently abled, not disabled,” as our clinical director says, the opportunity to shine in the kitchen, flipping pancakes like pros! For dinner, we graciously welcomed help from volunteers with Church of the Nativity to do a cookout on night one followed by a spaghetti dinner to close things out on night two. We even had some s'mores by the fireplace to close the night!

What were some favorite parts of the trip? I’ll let you hear it from the men:

  • “I loved listening to the performer play the guitar by the fireplace, reminded me of music nights with my parents as a kid,” referring to Dan Zanes who played thanks to Our Joyful Noise Baltimore.

  • “I loved the all you can eat spaghetti, ziplining was fun too.”

  • “The comradery, getting to know the guys better through the closeness we had” said one of our new clients.

  • “I enjoyed getting lost and using my military skills to find myself again.”

A huge thank you to all the staff at The Baltimore Station for working tirelessly to ensure the men had a positive experience as well as those at Camp Puh 'Tok for welcoming our group each year. A very special thank you to Church of the Nativity for donating the funds to make this trip possible. We could not make the difference we do without the support of our community!

Using Art to Relax and Reflect

BEAUTIFICATION ALERT! The Baltimore Station is working with local organizations and community members to help beautify our building and allow clients to get creative exploring the therapeutic benefits of art. We welcomed M&T Bank representatives to lead the men through a Paint & Snack activity this month, painting beautiful images that sparked joy for the men to help brighten up their personal areas in the dorm. Board member Natalie Arteen came out with her daughter Ani to teach the men some painting skills while enjoying a delicious spread. We are so grateful for this creative volunteer activity!

We have also been working with one of our clients who uses art to process trauma and stress to paint beautiful murals all throughout the first floor of our facility. A great way to honor all the men here who have served in the military, but also welcome visitors just learning about our mission and the work we do. Next time you’re here volunteering, consider taking a mural walk around the common spaces to see all the amazing talent we have here!
