A Message from the Founder & President
As we embrace the warmth of August, I hope this letter finds you in good spirits and health. The summer days are waning, and although we're still in the midst of the sultry heat, a sense of change is in the air. August marks the transition from summer to fall and heralds the return of school days and the excitement of football season. This time of change is an opportune moment to reflect on our progress and the incredible journey ahead for our furry companions.
As the sun-drenched days of summer slowly yield to the cooler embrace of autumn, it's a time for us all to prepare for change. As children gather their pencils and backpacks nationwide, our beloved dogs can also benefit from some adjustments. Our four-legged friends have become accustomed to the routines of the sunny season – long walks, backyard play, and the joy of basking in the warmth. As we ease into the new season, remember that your dogs may also need time to adapt.
Keep in mind that as the temperatures remain high, it's crucial to keep a watchful eye on our pups. Hydration is key, and those afternoon walks may need to be a bit shorter as the heat lingers. Paved surfaces can get scorching under the sun, so be sure your furry companions' paws are protected. Early morning or late evening outings can provide cooler and more comfortable opportunities for exercise.
As we look forward to the coming fall months, with the promise of crisp air and the sound of cheers at football games, let's also remember the vital role our dogs play in our lives. Football Sundays can be even more enjoyable with a furry friend by your side – a loyal companion to share in the excitement of touchdowns and the agony of last-minute field goals.
Our mission remains steadfast at Adopt a Golden Atlanta: finding loving homes for our golden retrievers. As we transition from summer to fall, we encourage you to consider opening your hearts and homes to one of these incredible dogs. Your kindness and dedication make our work possible, and with your support, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of these wonderful Goldens.
Thank you for being a part of the Adopt a Golden Atlanta family. Here's to a smooth transition into fall!

Wishing you all the best,

How to Prepare Your Dog for Back to School
|
Dogs and back to school time: yes, it affects them too. Fall is just around the corner and with it comes seasonal changes that are as obvious to your dog as they are to your human family.
After a summer together of hiking and swimming and camping, the transition back to cooler weather and shorter days jam-packed with indoor activities results in your dog taking a backseat.
| |
While some dogs handle these changes fine, for others it can be scary or frustrating to see the world they’d gotten used to in the summer months suddenly change.
Here are some ways to address the biggest potential pitfalls to your dog when the kids head back to school and summer fades into memory.

Why Did 488 Golden Retrievers Gather in Scotland?
Every five years, hundreds of golden retrievers and their owners gather at the ruins of Guisachan House in the Scottish Highlands to celebrate the founding of the breed. The gathering includes a tea party and tug-of-war.
The golden retriever breed originated in the Highlands of Scotland in the late 1800s. The first litter of golden retrievers was born in Scotland 155 years ago. The breed was developed by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks (later known as Lord Tweedmouth) by crossing Flat-coated Retrievers with Tweed Water Spaniels and other British dog breeds.

Check Your Dog Once A Month on the 14th!
Facts about Cancer in Dogs
Did you know that 1 in 3 dogs will be diagnosed with cancer? 50% of those dogs will die from cancer. In humans, there are 1.5 million new cases of cancer each year, but in dogs, there are 6 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year. Dog cancer prevention is key to a long healthy life with your dog.
It is important that you start your fight against canine cancer and any other health issue from the day you bring your dog home. Checking your dog once a month for lumps and bumps or any abnormal behavior is key in the prevention of any health issue with your dog. We recommend doing it on the 14th of every month. Checking your dog will be a great little bonding time with your dog. If you are starting with a young dog, this time will also prepare them for their future vet wellness visits.
| |
Now how exactly do you do this?
Start at their nose and work all the way to their tail. Make sure you are in a familiar, low-key environment where you and your pet can do this without distraction. In other words, not during dinner time or when you expect the mailman to be buzzing by the house.
Also, make sure you keep a journal of each of your Check Your Dog days so you will have notes to compare with should something arise.

Orphan of the Month: Liberty
My owner couldn’t take care of me any longer so she asked for help from AGA to find me a new home. I’m just 13 months old, a girl (a big one) and about 75 pounds. She sent a long list of things about me. First of all, I don’t like being left alone and I do not like thunderstorms. Leaving me in a crate when I have to stay alone helps me not be so nervous but no stuffed toys please. I will chew them up and swallow the stuffing! I sometimes have to be reminded not to jump on people. On the plus side, I am a happy, silly and loving dog who they say is part Labrador and part poodle. I love to go for car rides and I might like swimming if I get a chance to try that. I love chew bones, rope toys, playing fetch, and all people!

ASK THE TRAINER
How can you stop your dog from chewing?
| |
A dog's mouth is the canine equivalent of our hands; it's what dogs use to pick up and examine things, evaluate their potential use, and transport them from one place to another. It's a natural part of dog behavior.
Read about how you can prevent your favorite pair of shoes from being the next chewing victim.
