Meet Our Ballard Alumni of the Month

Amanda Yonts Eversole, Danny Eversole, Jim Yonts and Julie Yonts Woolsey

After 50 years in operations, Ballard has amassed many multi-generational families among its grads. We're going to feature one of those families this month. Amanda Yonts Eversole graduated in 2002 and went on to graduate from Jefferson Community & Technical College. She spent some time loading trucks at UPS (sometimes pulling double shifts) and had hoped to become a package car driver. Fate intervened as it sometimes does, and Amanda discovered in June 2022 that she was pregnant with daughter Lily. For now, she is taking some time to be a stay-ay-home mom with Lily while her husband Danny Yonts, Class of 2004, supports the family. Linda's dad Jim Yonts, Class of 1975 is a proud Ballard alum as is her sister Julie Yonts Woolsey, Class of 2004. Best of luck to our new parents Amanda and Danny! Hope you get that package car gig when you are ready to go back to work.

Highlights of the Coach Renner Award Ceremony on January 20

Former Coach Chris Renner was honored by Coach Greg Willis, former players and a packed house of fans at the January 20 basketball game. We even had the man who hired him, former Ballard Athletic Director Steve Kinney (father of our current AD Chris Kinney), there to congratulate him on a great career at Ballard.

Coach Renner posted impressive statistics while at Ballard:

  • 24 seasons - 651-159 won-loss record
  • 21 District 28 Championships
  • 9 7th Region Titles
  • 4 State Runner-Up's
  • 1 State Chaimpionship

Thanks once again Coach Renner for many years of great memories!

Teacher Feature: Emily David

Pre-Calc and Other Math Courses

Emily David had a unique path to Ballard. After graduating from Centre College with a Math major and a French minor, she spent a year teaching conversational English in a French high school in Strasbourg. She returned home and taught Math for nine years at Waggener before coming to Ballard fourteen years ago. While at Ballard, Emily has taught Honors Pre-Calculus and a variety of other Math courses. She has also been the coach of the Math Team over the past fourteen years.

Who on the Ballard faculty or staff has had the greatest influence on you thus far?

"Like so many of us in the Math department, Mary Eschels always encouraged me to keep improving as a teacher and to hold students to the highest standard."

What are your best memories of your time at Ballard?

"Being in Lexington when Ballard's softball team won the State and witnessing an amazing triple play."

What can the Alumni Association do to help you do your job better?

"Create a database of alumni who are willing and able to be classroom guest speakers would be great! Nothing fancy -- just sheet with names, contact info, career/job experience and subject area where applicable would be fine."

Emily, you have become a real asset to Ballard and its students over the years. Keep on pushing our students to achieve as much as they can.

How about it, Alumni -- any volunteers out there willing to serve as a guest speaker for a Math class?

Lunch & Learn #3 for Media Arts Was a Big Success

The Alumni Association recently completed a third opportunity for students to learn about potential careers from Ballard grads. This event focused on the Media Arts Academies of Louisville program. Student participating are chosen by their teachers, getting to hear and ask questions of three community professionals over lunch. The goal is to provide real-world insights and networking opportunities to students in their areas of interest.

Our speakers for the Media Arts Academy program included:

  • Laurel Deppen, 2017 grad and reporter for Business First (top);
  • Andrew Clark, 2007 grad and Digital Marketing Director at Nationwide Insurance (middle) ;
  • Rachel Collier Carr, 2006 grad and Director of Communications at the Kentucky Derby Museum (bottom).

Once again, students speakers and teachers all agreed that it was a lively and enjoyable interactive experience for all involved.

Are you a Visual & Performing Arts professional who would be willing to share your knowledge and passion with students in this area? We're looking for speakers for our next event in April. If you are interested, please reach out to our Alumni Association board member Rebekah Mulloy at rebekah.mulloy@gmail.com.
