FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Chris Holden | @MonsieurHolden | 952.848.4100

On Friday, January 27th after 4:00 PM you will have access to your student’s first semester report card in Infinite Campus. Below are some clarifying points to help you navigate your student’s report card.

The key on the upper right hand corner of the report card briefly explains what the 1 to 4 scores mean. These scores do not equate to A, B, C, D grades, rather they are focused on the level of independence your child exhibits.

A score of 1 indicates that your student has not met that outcome regardless of the level of support. A 2 indicates that your student can demonstrate proficiency when given support.

Finally, a 3 indicates that your child is meeting the grade level expectation independently and consistently. Rarely are 4’s given, especially in academic areas, simply because a 3 indicates that your child is working independently at the grade level expectation. Please refer to the table below for a more detailed description of the 1 to 4 rubric.

Hopefully this information helps you better understand your student’s progress for the first half of the year.

RALLY MONTH IS HERE!

During the month of January, we are recruiting Host Families for the 2023-2024 school year!

We need ***31 additional Host Families*** to sign up by the January 31st deadline.

We need host families signed up in order to extend offers in February to our French Interns. Without 60 host families, we will not be able to bring 27 interns to Edina next

fall. PLEASE sign up to host! All you need to have is a legal bedroom.

Host families are a critical part of our Edina French Immersion program. Check out our Rally Month hub to learn more and sign up now!

Sign Up To Host

The success of our Edina French Immersion program depends on having warm, welcoming host families for our French Interns. Without French Interns, we could not sustain our position as a top immersion program. With 60 Host Families total, we can support 27 French Interns, meeting our ideal allocation of Interns across all schools:

Normandale French Immersion

Kindergarten: 5 interns, 1 per class

1st grade: 4 interns, 1 per class

2nd grade: 5 interns, 1 per class

3rd grade: 3 interns

4th - 5th grade: 2 interns per grade

Valley View/EHS Extended French

Valley View: 3 interns

Edina High School: 3 interns

Our final Rally Month theme day is this Friday 1/27:

French Day – rock your blue, white, and red.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

FEBRUARY IS READ-A-THON MONTH!

We are excited to announce our annual Read-A-Thon is taking place in February!

La lecture, j'assure! Reading is my Superpower!

Minutes reading means minutes learning. Our goal for the Normandale Read a Thon is to encourage and celebrate students' reading. Their habits of reading will develop lifelong learners, whether they read with imagination or read for information.

This is also an all-school fundraiser benefiting the Normandale library. Funds raised from our Read-A-Thon will be used to:

  • improve our information (nonfiction) collection. We will refresh our English and French nonfiction reading collection of books.
  • improve the way students view and find our books. We will move our library organization to more of a “bookstore” model, where like-subjects are grouped together.

Students will collect pledges from family and friends and log their reading minutes using our NEW online system during the month of February. All minutes spent reading or listening, independently and together can be logged. Audiobooks, book readings online, and reading to siblings and pets ALL COUNT! Both French and English reading minutes count as well.

Our school goal is to have the students of Normandale read 500,000 minutes during the month of February. This is 30 minutes per day for 4 weeks. WE CAN DO IT! We did it last year, we can do it again this year!

We hope that we can both celebrate and encourage reading and make our library experience that much better for students. Thank you for your support!

MEET THE INTERN

SARAH PILONI - THIRD GRADE

ABOUT ME:  I was born in the South of France in Marseille. Since 2009, I have been living near Evian, in Haute Savoie, near the Swiss border with my mother. We live in a small village, in the mountains. It’s beautiful, we live in front of Lake Geneva and Switzerland. I live with my mother, we get along great, we are very fusional ! This year I studied in Lyon, and I fell in love with this city ! Concerning my hobbies, I am a creative person, I love to draw and paint. I also love to watch movies and TV series and read. I practiced modern dance for 5 years, and I still dance on my own. I enjoy to hike in the mountains, particularly in summer. And I found a new passion for cooking and bakery for some years. I love to cook Italian food, Asian food, and also French and American bakery.

IN THE US:   I am excited to discover the Minnesotan life, I am open-minded and curious, so I am open to any suggestions ! I am so glad to be part of this cross-cultural experience. I would really love to learn about the American way of life. I would like to discover the Minnesotan culture, and the city of Edina, go to movie theater, walk in the parks, see a baseball game with my own eyes... In brief I would like to live the perfect American experience. If I have the possibility, I would also like to travel, New York and Chicago are some destinations that I have in mind for the moment !

MY FAVORITE FOOD:  On my daily life, I like to eat simple and healthy food such as mixed salads, but I am also keen of pastas and burgers ! I love Italian food, such as lasagnas, pizzas and pastas, Asian Food such as sushis and woks, and as I love to cook, I love to bake desserts such as cookies, cheesecakes or lemon bars.

I AM EXCITED ABOUT:    I am excited to live this cross-cultural experience, and to share French culture with American people. I would like to share our language, but also make them discover our history, literature, our art, and of course our daily life. I am also excited to live in a host family to discover the American way of life and take part in it. Of course, I am also impatient to discover and visit Minnesota. In brief, "sharing and discovering" will be my motto during this year in Edina.

BUDGET REDUCTION/REVENUE GENERATION

THOUGHTEXCHANGE

The Edina Public Schools district has begun the Budget Reduction/Revenue Generation (BRRG) process for the 2023-24 school year. Please join Superintendent Dr. Stacie Stanley and Director of Business Services Mert Woodard at a community input session to learn more about the BRRG process and provide your input. Each year school districts adjust their budgets to align with anticipated revenues. Balancing the budget will require approximately $4MM in budget adjustments. EPS is committed to making adjustments based on sound financial stewardship while seeking to maintain current class sizes and program offerings.

The Budget Reduction/Revenue Generation ThoughtExchange is open through February 3, 2023 at 4 PM. Please continue to share your thoughts and join the conversation.

Find the session schedule and more information regarding the BRRG process here. Check this website regularly for BRRG updates.
