THE LIFE OF MOSES – LESSON 5

THE BURNING BUSH

The seven women, as told by their father, went back to the watering well and brought Moses home to dine with them. It worked out well for all parties as Moses had nowhere in particular to go and Jethro apparently had no son to tend to his flock. Jethro made Moses a part of the household and gave him his daughter Zipporah to be his wife. He settled down and raised a family.

He now spent the next forty years of his life as a herdsman in the wilderness. This became practical training for the next era of his life where he would be leading Israel all around this same wilderness lifestyle for an additional forty years.

After forty years in Midian, Moses found himself one day with the flock (Exodus 3:1) on the “backside of the dessert… to the mountain of God… to Horeb.” Something extraordinary happened there at “the mountain of God” as it was later called.

He saw a bush that was burning, but it was not being consumed by the fire as normally would happen. It was an astounding sight, so he turned aside and began to approach it. He was stopped by an audible voice that told him not to come any nearer. Verse 2 says the angel of the LORD appeared from the flame speaking to him. This “angel” was a manifestation of the LORD Himself. He told Moses to take off his shoes because it was holy ground, and identified Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

God told Moses that He had seen the affliction of His people in Egyptian slavery and was choosing Moses to deliver them from Pharaoh and Egypt. Moses questioned this, but God promised him a sign in the future that this was of Him. The promise was that when he brought his people out of Egypt, they would worship God at this very same mountain.

What mountain was this “mountain of God?” The Midianites called it Horeb. Israel would call it Sinai. This is the very mountain where Jehovah met with Moses to give him his assignment, and later the ten commandments and the law.  

 It would appear that Mount Sinai, (Mount Horeb) served as a portal to heaven. The Muslims who control the Sinai Peninsula today have it cordoned off as a sacred mountain where nobody is allowed to ascend.

SPOTS, WRINKLES AND BLEMISHS

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians instructions for holy living. In chapter 5:25-29 he is speaking to husbands, but it can apply to each of us individually. It says, “25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church.”

When a man loves his wife with the kind of love that Jesus has for his church, it nourishes her. Jesus gave his life for his church, and we are to lay down our lives for each other in marriage, and in the body of Christ. We are to cherish our spouse and nourish them. This causes the spots, wrinkles, and blemishes to be removed, through that love.

Spot comes from the Greek word “spilos” which means a defect, a stain, disgrace. This is caused by sin. When we love one another enough to bring a person out of that place of sin, we are loving them as Jesus loved his Church.

Blemish comes from the Greek word “amomos” which means blamable, with fault, and spotted with sin. Again, when we love each other with God’s love, it brings to the surface those things that are blemishes. Then, it can be washed away through repentance.

Wrinkle comes from the Greek word “rhutis” which means to fold over. Often, we fold over or hide or sin from God. The love of Christ brings these “wrinkles” to the surface, exposing them so they can be dealt with.

You will notice that we must be the ones that let God’s love flow through to us to those with spots, wrinkles, and blemishes so they can receive God’s love and forgiveness.  We cannot be a hot iron and press these things out of their lives. That will never work. Love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:8.) Let God’s love flow into you and through you, touching lives.

Father, we give You all the Glory, Praise and Honor. Thank you for all that You have done in our lives. I know that we are healed and made whole, mentally, physically and spiritually. No weapon formed against us will succeed because we are covered by Your wings.

We have a blood covenant with You Father and because of that covenant, we have authority over all ungodliness that may come against us or our families.
