August 1- Leading Forward: A Message from the Wardens

Dear All Saints,

As we continue to lead forward with initiatives to ensure the health and well-being of All Saints Church, we continue to offer opportunities to gather for conversations about where we are as a congregation during this time of transition -- we are also focusing on several immediate considerations, including preparing to welcome a Priest-in-Charge and addressing our budgeting challenges.

Transition Information Session Updates

The Vestry has been coordinating these sessions for our community over the past few weeks. Since Vestry members are already involved within many of our existing small groups, it proved to be the quickest way to organize our initial outreach efforts to connect with people to share information and listen.

So far, we have met with the 40’s & 50’s group twice, the AAPI group, Greeters twice, EFM, LGBTQ+ group twice, Westminster Gardens, Diaspora group, Peace & Justice and the Elders’ Council. Clergy are invited and have been able to attend many of these. We have met with over 200 parishioners this way and will continue these meetings with our existing small groups. Additionally, the Vestry met with the RJAB (Racial Justice Advisory Board) team this week and will bring an update regarding moving the work of the Racial Justice Resolution forward to the August 18 Vestry meeting.

As a reminder, we also have a series of transition information sessions open to all parishioners. All sessions will be 20 or less attendees, so that everyone has ample time to comment and inquire. You will need to RSVP with the link below.

We have found these meetings to be very supportive, not only for the attendees, but also for the Vestry members facilitating them. We find these very valuable for us as we come away feeling genuine healing and comradery with those who have shared their concerns and feelings. So far these have all been completely in person. Our next priority will be scheduling online sessions for those who are unable to attend these initial in person meetings.

Please remember that our Vestry members are all volunteers for this project and genuinely wish to support all of you. They really have nothing personal to gain in any explanation that they provide, so will be as frank as they can. Please respect their commitment and the limits they have of what they can discuss.

Preparing for a Priest-in-Charge (a note from Canon McCarthy)

The Priest-in-Charge (PIC) is appointed by the bishop in consultation with All Saints leadership. The duties of the PIC are the same as a rector with two exceptions. First, the PIC does not have tenure. They serve for an agreed length of time and that agreement can be extended if necessary. Second, the PIC is also responsible for doing the interim work necessary to prepare the congregation for their next rector. The time frame is dependent upon the congregation, but in the case of All Saints we expect a two-year agreement. As an appointee of the bishop, the PIC reports to the bishop but this is truly a mutual ministry between PIC and the Vestry. As such there will be mutual ministry reviews on annual basis facilitated by a member of the bishop’s staff.

Stewarding our Finances

As many of you know, the Vestry is undertaking a heavy lift this year, as we confront a large deficit in our budget process. We want to mindfully and ethically steward our financial and physical resources to continue to make God’s love tangible in the world. This will be considered within our upcoming Finance Committee meeting, our Vestry Meeting on 8/18 and our quarterly Financial Forum on 8/25 following worship. We want to be able to arrive at a fully solvent budget in the future. We do have reserves, so are not in any immediate danger pertaining to cash flow. However, our fiduciary responsibility as a Vestry is to prepare for the long-term financial well-being of All Saints, and we very greatly appreciate all of your support in this very difficult decision-making process.

Vestry Meetings

We held our last Vestry meeting on 7/21 with a strong showing of support from all of you (photos below graciously supplied by Susan Brown). We invite you to attend the August Vestry Meeting on 8/18 at 12 noon in the Forum and our quarterly financial forum on 8/25 at 12 noon, also in the Forum. A light lunch will be available, so you will be able to join us right from the beginning of those meetings.

We begin this journey together as we join one another in love and care to build a strong future for All Saints Church. Thank you for all of your encouraging words, support and actions that you are sharing.

Queremos ser capaces de llegar a un presupuesto totalmente solvente en el futuro. Tenemos reservas, por lo que no corremos ningún peligro inmediato en lo que respecta al flujo de activos. Sin embargo, nuestra responsabilidad fiduciaria como Junta Parroquial es prepararnos para el bienestar financiero a largo plazo para la Iglesia de Todos los Santos, y apreciamos enormemente todo su apoyo en este proceso de toma de decisiones tan difíciles.
