Building a Foundation for the Future
Letter from Dr. Luft

Dear Putnam Valley Community,

As we begin our third (and first full) week of instruction, it is evident that everyone is beginning to hit their stride. The start of the new school year has brought smiling faces back to our classrooms and renewed energy to our buildings. Teachers are already building meaningful relationships with students while providing engaging learning experiences.

Thanks to the hard work of our buildings and grounds staff, our facilities are spotless, inside and out. Our technology department has updated interactive displays and laptops to ensure everyone can access learning. Administrators and office staff spent the summer planning for the successful start of a new school year. I want to extend a huge thank you to the members of our transportation department, our school monitors, and clinical staff members for ensuring our students remain safe and supported from the moment they step on the bus until the time they arrive back home.

We welcome the new staff members to our Putnam Valley School community, and we appreciate the energy they bring to our buildings. Ms. Jaime Zecca, joins us as our new Interim Middle School Assistant Principal and at the High School, Mr. Matt Mello and Dr. Letitia Payne will be serving in new roles this year as Interim Principal and Interim Assistant Principal.

This past Sunday marked the somber anniversary of September 11, 2001, a day that will forever remain etched into the minds of those who are old enough to remember. I personally spent that day at Putnam Valley High School where I was working as a Teaching Assistant, the events of which remain too raw for me to rewatch the media coverage. However, the acts of heroism remain as inspirational to me today as they did twenty-one years ago. Each year as we commemorate those lost on September 11, 2001, I am reminded of how everyone came together as one, creating a collective unity that I hope will return to this great country one day.

In Putnam Valley, we see the power of community in multiple ways. We have wonderful organizations that support our students and our community, and all of them are looking for volunteers. Attending a parent meeting, joining our PTA and PV Education Foundation, coaching a youth sports team, volunteering with the Fire Department or Ambulance Corps, both of which have youth corps as well, or donating to the Putnam Valley Food Pantry are all ways to make new friends and strengthen our community. I encourage everyone to support our Putnam Valley community by giving the gift of your time. We are grateful to all of our volunteers!

Please mark your calendars! In recognition of First Responders Day, October 28, we will invite all first responders who live and work in our community to join us at our homecoming football game (5 pm start). First responders will be asked to lead our team down to the turf and our community will have an opportunity to recognize and honor their service. Please look for more details about other events currently in the planning stages for Wednesday, October 26, at all three buildings.

     Sincerely,

     Dr. Jeremy Luft

PVCSD Summer Highlights

Our extended school year students had the opportunity to build bird feeders over the summer. Students spent time gluing pieces and using an electric drill to assemble the houses. The construction of the house presented powerful learning opportunities for students while also creating something useful. These students were able to paint the houses and take them home. We would love to hear what our students observe when various birds visit their houses.

Mrs. LaVarnway’s fifth graders in the Summer Boost program were inspired by the story of "Caine's Arcade" to create their own mathematics arcade. This STEAM project encouraged students to showcase their creativity and incorporate math concepts by designing innovative games out of recyclables. The cardboard arcade included games such as fraction foosball, table-top soccer, and multiplication car racing. Students were so eager to get to work that they arrived on the second day with their project proposals completed. Allison, a student, shared, "I love that I get to build what I want to design. It's so fun!" The math arcade had its grand opening on the last day of the Summer Boost program and was a major success!

Colleagues Lead SEL, Mindfulness, Computer Science, Literacy, and More Training at SCD!

On August 31, teachers and administrators from all corners of PVCSD led workshops for district colleagues during our Superintendent's Day Conference. We thank these great leaders for providing great learning opportunities for all!

PVCSD Welcomes New Colleagues

During the month of August, PVCSD held its annual New Employee Welcome Breakfast and a three-day orientation. This gives new colleagues a chance to learn all about our mission, vision, and educational best practices, as well as get to know key members of the PVCSD community!

Big Buddies Welcome 9th Graders!

Over the summer, Mrs. Penta and Mrs. DiSiena held three workshops with seniors to train them to be mentors in our Big Buddy program. On September 1, our Big Buddies came to school to get acquainted with their new ninth-grade friends and helped them manage their first day of school.

Big Buddies will be working with the freshmen all year to help them navigate high school life. Mrs. DiSiena expressed great pride in the students, sharing: “Our seniors came in on their last day of summer vacation and worked tirelessly to make the morning special, all while dealing with their own senior year stresses. They exhibited the learner profile attributes perfectly, speaking volumes about how we are doing exactly what we aimed to do when IB was introduced. We are so proud of them, and we are so grateful to the entire school community for fostering this culture and spirit.”

Way to go, Tigers!

Middle School Maker Space Opens!

PVMS is thrilled to announce that the new Maker Space is up and running! Students and faculty are looking forward to utilizing this space. The space can be reserved for classes, and students have the choice to go into this space during recess to create! Maker Spaces present great opportunities for students to develop engineering skills and innovate. Our students have the freedom to build and create by following online instructions or using their own imaginations! We are excited to see what our middle schoolers design and invent this year!

PVES Is SO Happy to Welcome You Back!

We are so happy to welcome you back! Dr. Podesta, Principal, and Mrs. Picco, Assistant Principal, are so excited to be working together and welcoming the elementary students, faculty, and staff back to the 2022-23 school year! The Kindergarten Orientation and Bus Run took place with students and parents on August 25, and the Back-to-School Nights for Grades 1-4 took place in early September. With a revised master schedule, new class sections, and a brand new ELA program, Scholastic Literacy, the Elementary School is off to an amazing year of learning and growing!

PVES Classrooms are Busy, Engaging Places, Inside and Out!

Since school started for our students on September 1, our classrooms have been filled with energetic teachers and learners. Our learning spaces are clean, organized, and well-decorated for the beginning of the year; and classrooms are becoming learning communities, where children will grow and thrive throughout the year. Thank you to      Mr. Spittal, Mr. Renzo, and our entire facilities team for the work that was done this year to update and enhance our beautiful outdoor learning spaces! From the outdoor learning center, new picnic table areas, hiking paths, and our beautiful pond area, our students are very lucky to have so many natural settings for learning activities!

#TigerPride Alert: Fall Athletics Are On!

Fall sports are back and PV is off to a great start! JV and Varsity Football started the year off strong with wins against Westlake and Blindbrook, respectively. Varsity Volleyball is sitting atop the league with a 3-0 record. The team has defeated Westlake, Brewster, and Pleasantville in 3 sets each! Varsity Field Hockey faced tough competition from Yorktown and Albertus Magnus but came out on top as the champions of the Yorktown tournament. Senior Ava Harman was recognized as the tournament MVP!

Boys Varsity Soccer recorded their first win of the year in a 5-1 victory over Woodlands. Our Varsity Cross Country runners picked up where they left off with a strong showing in the Somers Invitational. Senior Gabby Randazzo led the team, placing 4th in her division and 8th overall.

As a matter of fact, PV hosted our first Varsity Cross Country races! The boys team placed first over Pawling, Tuckahoe, and Pleasantville. Individually, Michael Fitzmaurice placed second and Jonathan Duraes placed fourth in the Varsity race. Massimo Cartetegui placed second in the freshmen race. On the girls side, Gabriella Randazzo won the Varsity race and Julia DiMichele won the freshmen race.

In other exciting PV Athletics news, PV hosted former NY Giant and 2x Superbowl Champion Ahmad Bradshaw for an afternoon of skills, drills, and motivation. Our thanks to this NFL superstar for taking the time to work with our boys; just in time for our first home game tonight! FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16. GO TIGERS!

About the PVEF:

The PVEF is a non-profit organization that enhances our students’ education. This year the PVEF was able to fund grants over $8k back to the PV schools. These grants support innovative projects and programs outside of the school budget. The PVEF hosts 4 fundraising events throughout the school year; the Color Run, Trunk or Treat, Auction & Apps, and Casino Night. We rely on our community attendance to support these initiatives and look forward to our upcoming events in the new school year! Questions?
