"What does legacy mean to you?" A mentor of mine at Dartmouth College said he would ask that question to graduates of Dartmouth when broaching the subject of planned giving.
On that note, a man named Jordan Cassidy has a story of his own about the power of legacy. At the age of 37, his father, John Cassidy, active, healthy, and heading into the peak of his career, had his world flipped upside down. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor and living on what doctors call “borrowed time.”
Fortunately, Jordan's dad was a planner. Before getting sick, he made it his goal to complete an estate plan. Some would say, “John, you’re so healthy and young. Why do you care so much?”
By completing his estate plan, Jordan's father ensured his wishes were known and saved his family from the stress and costs created by probate proceedings. As a result, Jordan's dad protected his family’s livelihood and enabled his legacy to live on to this day.
So---what is YOUR legacy? When you are gone from this earth, how will people remember you? Maybe it's the love you infuse through a last will and testament. Or a heartfelt letter to your family. Maybe it's through a trust. Or, it's through the time, talent, treasure, and connections that you have offered during your living days.
