God made him who had no sin to be sin for us,

so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

-2 Corinthians 5:21-

Last week I visited a family who just brought home their newest member, a precious baby girl. Her sisters beamed, her daddy smiled, and her mother provided the nourishment required for life. When I held that precious 5-pound little girl I noticed how tiny, fragile, and helpless she was in my arms. I realized that without her mother and father, she would not be alive, they did everything for that newborn. That’s what loving parents do- they give their child everything- even life! The baby’s task? Well, let’s just say opening her miniature eyelids was her greatest achievement for the day.

Only days old, that precious girl is doing exactly what she should- relying fully on her parents to care for her depending completely on them. She doesn’t decide who gets to do all the work to keep her alive, they just do it.

After she was born, her parents did not say, “Let’s wait to make sure she behaves… then we will care for her.” Who would say that? That loving mom and dad did not say “Let’s make sure she is successful, then we will love her.” No! Those parents love and provide everything she needs.

So it is with you. God gives you everything. The Apostle Paul said that though he was sinless, Jesus became sin. Though you are sinful, you are made righteous in him. We don't use the word righteousness much today, but it simply means being who we are created to be in Christ.  We cannot be righteous on our own, we need complete eternal care. Jesus died and rose again. Jesus sustains us, protects us, and even throws away the dirty diapers of our sins. God did all the work of salvation for you and feeds you with his Word and His promises over and over again.

The righteousness of Jesus protects you from Satan who wants your heart. Yes, Satan wants to steal your heart making you believe that you can do more than God and that somehow save yourself. You can’t save yourself- a baby knows that, and that why our Lord Jesus said a child’s faith is saving faith. You have eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Your job? Well, your greatest achievement for the day might just be opening your eyelids and relying on Jesus.

This Sunday we put on another piece of God’s armor- the breastplate of righteousness which protects our hearts from the evil one. See you Sunday - I can’t wait!

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place (Ephesians 6:14)

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
