Project HIRE Director Promotes Work for People with IDD at NDEAM Event

Colleen Collick, The Arc of NJ's Project HIRE Director, participated in a roundtable panel discussion last month to bring awareness to the diverse and skilled talent that the State needs, with a specific focus on how disability-inclusive workforces can help solve for labor shortages and lift communities. Hosted by Citizens Bank in Short Hills, the event was moderated by New Jersey Business and Industry Association and lunch was served by No Limits Cafe. The roundtable focused on ways businesses can benefit from hiring individuals with disabilities. The event was held in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Meet Alberto & Jame'r Who Work at Overlook Hospital

Alberto Ortiz enjoys his work at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Alberto was hired after being a part of Project Search, a one-year employment preparation program that takes place entirely within the hospital. He is also supported by a

Project HIRE job coach. Alberto is a patient transporter. It's a role he's held for the past 8 years! Alberto says his favorite part of working is seeing new faces, gaining independence and earning money. He says working at Overlook has been a very positive experience. For anyone interested in competitive employment, Alberto says the most important part is to work hard, do your best, be yourself and show compassion to others.

Jame'r Harrison has worked at Overlook Hospital for the past three years. Like Alberto, he is also a former Project Search program participant and he receives support through Project HIRE. Jame'r works in food service at the hospital. His responsibilities include garbage disposal, dishwashing and stocking. Jame'r says working gives him the opportunity to learn new things and utilize time management skills. For anyone interested in competitive employment, Jame'r emphasizes the importance of working hard, thinking positive, staying consistent and setting goals for the future. He enjoys getting feedback on his work and he receives great motivation from his supervisors.
