Dr. Angela Carman appointed as endowed chair in rural health policy

Angels Carman, DrPH, Associate Professor in the Health, Behavior & Society department at CPH was recently appointed as the endowed chair in Rural Health Policy. UK public health student awarded prestigious CURE Fellowship

Public health student Rachel Gressick was one of 20 UK undergraduates selected for the 2023 Commonwealth Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) Fellowship program, providing undergraduates opportunities to develop new knowledge and skills through research within UK’s research priority areas.

Meet UK public health and first-gen student, Morgan DeChene

First-generation undergraduate student Morgan Dechene is studying public health and pre-occupational therapy at UK. Passionate, driven, and determined, first-gen students simply “don’t give up." Morgan plans to pursue her doctorate in occupational therapy and become an occupational therapist — advancing on her passion and dream for helping more people. 

Meet Elizabeth Crolley, a first-generation success story from Eastern Kentucky

Elizabeth Crolley is a first-generation graduate and is currently a Senior Program Grant Coordinator staff member at CPH’s Office of Research. Growing up in a rural part of Eastern Kentucky surrounded by gravel, 4 wheelers, long daytime shadows, steep mountains, and slippery hills in the winter, Elizabeth is now helping people "help people" in public health.

UK alum Nicole Barber-Culp hired to expand workforce development initiatives

Nicole Barber-Culp recently joined CPH as the Workforce Development and Public Health Practice Program Manager. Originally from Frankfort, KY., Nicole plans to expand our capacity to invest and diversify the current and future public health workforce through training, experiential learning, professional development, and collaboration.

Alumna finds public health career in outbreak prevention at CDC

Alumna Charlene Siza currently works at the CDC as an epidemiologist on the prevention team for the International Infection Control Program, Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, and has traveled the globe focusing on international infection prevention and antimicrobial resistance.

Sydney Clark Story: "I Have A Disability. I'm Blind. I Know What You Go Through."

Every day still presents some challenges for CPH alumna Sydney Clark who was born with a genetic condition that resulted in losing her vision over time. However, Syndey never allowed her disability to stop her from achieving her academic and professional goals — attending UK and becoming a public health influencer and champion.


Public Health alum prepares for new role at the Pentagon

CPH alumnus Marcus A. Hincks was promoted to major in the United States Air Force in a special ceremony attended by friends, family and colleagues at Sheppard AFB, Texas. Since, Maj. Hincks has assumed a new role as a fellow with the Air Force Budget Program at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

The Provost's 2023 Outstanding Teaching Awards: Dr. Amanda Ellis

Amanda Ellis, Ph.D, vice chair of the Department of Biostatistics and director of graduate studies of the MS in Biostatistics program at CPH, is one of 10 winners to receive UK's 2022-23 Outstanding Teaching Awards recognizing individuals who demonstrate special dedication to student achievement and who are successful in their teaching. 

UK receives renewed award to continue environmental health research in Appalachia

With a grant totaling $7.4 million over the next five years (a renewed award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences), the UK Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Sciences will continue its work to study major environmental health impacts on Kentuckians.

To address the significant number of workers in recovery from substance use disorder, the Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health Surveillance (KOSHS) program at the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center has developed a toolkit to assist small businesses in hiring and retaining this significant segment of the population.

Swimming Safety Tips

With more navigable miles of water than any other state besides Alaska, Kentucky is a great place for swimming in the summer. But did you know that 329 Kentuckians died by unintentionally drowning from 2016 to 2021?
