The Salem Grease Management Program recently distributed a flyer with tips on what to do -- and not do -- with household fats, oils, and grease (FOG) and so-called "flushable" items, including wipes, paper towels, tissues, dental floss, and more.
Key Takeaways:
DO:
- Compost grease/gravies/sauces/batters, or
- Dispose in the trash in used tins or other heat-resistant containers, or
- Wait until cool, wipe up with paper towels, and throw in the trash
DON'T:
- Pour grease/gravies/sauces/batters down the drain or toilet
- Put food scraps down the drain or toilet
- Flush anything but toilet paper (no tissues, floss, wipes!)
Toilet paper is the only paper product that should be flushed!
Disposing of FOG improperly and flushing anything but toilet paper may damage your plumbing, compromise treatment facilities, and have a negative impact on public health and our environment.
