Message From the Chapter President
I am sitting at my desk at work, wondering what in the world I should write about.

  • I see a plaque that I found when we were cleaning out my parents’ house. It belonged to my grandmother. She’s not blood-related, but she invited my mother to come to the United States with her when the U.S. Air Force transferred her to Michigan. She ended up introducing my parents to each other. She never married and had no children, so we were her family. The plaque shows her accreditation as a Chamber of Commerce Executive. Where do I work now?! The MMAC aka Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce. What are the chances! She organized the annual air shows with the Air Force and of course, annual festivals and fairs for the Chamber of Commerce. I would say that I’m an organizer too! We may not be related by blood, but I think she made an impact on my life.
  • I look at my calendar and there are pictures with my parents with one of my grandchildren at their house where they lived for 60 years.  They are in a facility now, but to see their happy faces in their house with their great grandchild brings so many memories.
  • Remember our social at the print shop? My poster hangs at my desk. It says “Thoughts are not fact. No judgement zone.” A constant reminder to me to nix the negative conversations in my head.
  • Several years ago, I was honored by the annual Rocky Theisen Kapp and Donna Munnik show with a red Superwoman cape! Sometimes, I’m tempted to wear it around the office! Hah! Too funny. But seriously, I was honored to be thought of in such a positive light.
  • Mary Ellen Powers, the MMAC COO for decades, passed several years ago. Her husband was a photographer. I have one of his framed pictures at my desk. I would say that Mary Ellen was one of my mentors and supporters. This picture, though it is just a photo of an eggplant, sends me thoughts of her. I really miss her a lot.
  • EWI had a guest speaker who gave us stones to write a saying on. Mine was “DO IT.” Sound familiar?
  • My granddaughter gave me a McDonald’s Anna figurine (from Frozen). She stands by my computer and watches over me. Of course, my granddaughter wanted to take it back…I said “no, I need her to keep me company.”

These are things that are on my desk at work. Can you see the impact that EWI has had on my life? I’m surrounded by positive thoughts and memories. During my board retreat last September, I told my board that “they are creating memories.” Hopefully they have done their job! I can’t believe that I only have a couple months left. Here’s to memories.

July Literacy Partner Awards
Date: July 12, 2022
Oak Creek Community Center

At our July meeting, we recognized our literacy partners, Next Door and the YWCA Southeast Wisconsin.

Guest speakers from Next Door, Cristina Crogan (Vice President of Development and Communication) and Dr. Tonya Hameister (Director of Educational Services) presented us with an overview and update of new and exciting literacy initiatives at Next Door. They discussed the details of the Accelerator Program for the 4K and 5K readers group and how our literacy funding will impact that program and families in the Milwaukee community. YWCA SEW Chief Program Officer, Jennifer de Montmollin, shared a snapshot of YWCA Southeast Wisconsin's Economic Empowerment programs with an emphasis on its Personal Financial Management program, which builds financial literacy and wealth building skills through workshops, 1:1 coaching, and community collaboration.

YWCA – Funding will be earmarked to support digital access for the students obtaining their GED and HSED. Having access to tools and technologies such as computers will give the students digital literacy to learn and work where access to information is through digital technologies.

Next Door – Funding will be used to purchase books for their Accelerator Fuel Packs for the 4K and 5K readers group.
Upcoming Meetings

Membership Meeting
5:30 - 8:00 pm
Red Mill Inn
Join us for our August meeting where we will learn what it means to be a warrior.

Our guest speaker, Maggie Spada, co-founder (and Warrior Mom!) of Little Warrior Foundation, will be on hand to talk about funding and finding a lasting cure for childhood cancer, with a specific focus on Ewing's Sarcoma. Learn more about the fight against childhood cancer from the foundation's powerful video.
We will also use our meeting time for a very fun and worthwhile activity benefiting the foundation.

Ewing Sarcoma is most commonly seen in high school-aged kids. This generation of high schoolers are pretty incredible and eager to get involved with their community to make an impact (and stand out in the competitive college admissions process). The Warrior Foundation has witnessed the amazing things they can do raising funds and awareness for other causes; yet, it is the demographic that they have a harder time breaking through to.

EWI Milwaukee will have its first ever Shark-Tank-Esque competition where groups will break out, brainstorm ideas, and then gather to present their ideas on how to best engage adolescents/young adults. This will be a super fun way for our members to flex their brilliance!

The foundation has put together a high-level outline for reference. The foundation will supply the prizes, the whiteboard, and bring in a tough panel of judges (high school girls!).

Additionally, the foundation will supply two wines - Fields of Gold and Little Warrior Rose - for the group to taste while brainstorming. If anyone is interested in purchasing them, the proceeds go back to the foundation.
RSVP BY JULY 29TH.
