Environmental Management and Protection Act (EMPA) Consultation by the Ministry of Environment

The Environmental Management and Protection Act, 2010 (the Act) is the overarching legislation that protects Saskatchewan's air, land and water resources by regulating and controlling potentially harmful activities and substances.

In early 2021, officials from the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Justice and the Water Security Agency raised concerns with enforceability of the Act which has led to this legislative review.

The review focuses only on the Act. The regulations, Code chapters and standards are outside of this review's scope.

The review will take place over two years (concluding in 2024) and involve stakeholder and Indigenous engagement, committee hearings and legislative assembly debate. The information gathered will help inform decision-making when updating and refining the Act.

Deadline: August 25, 2023, to empa@gov.sk.ca.

When submitting your feedback, please use the subject line: EMPA 2010 Legislative Review. You can also comment on the legislative process for this review by submitting your comments to the email address provided above.

Near Water

Canada's fish and fish habitat are a shared resource that provides social, economic and ecological benefits - but they are also finite and vulnerable. They must therefore be conserved and protected to maintain these benefits for present and future generations.

Many partners and stakeholders, including federal departments, provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous peoples, recreational fishing groups, conservation organizations, and industry groups share a common interest in the conservation and protection of fish and fish habitat. The conservation and protection of fish and fish habitat may best be achieved when these partners and stakeholders work together to conserve and protect fish and fish habitat.

The Fisheries Act and the Species at Risk Act provide a legal basis for conserving and protecting fish and fish habitats.
