Dear Church Family,

Years ago FPCW took a survey called CAT (Congregation Assessment Tool) to get a good picture of our strengths and weaknesses before a senior pastor was hired (eventually Jeff Lehn!). We scored very well but had one weakness: hospitality. People were aghast – “of course we’re hospitable…this must be wrong!” (overheard at the reveal of the results) Turns out we are friendly amongst ourselves but not so great at reaching beyond. This has stuck in my mind (and I’m still figuring out specifically what it has to do with Worship and Music, yet I know it does) so this TED talk grabbed my attention: https://youtu.be/bwcyXcOpWVs.

It's a great story about how a fancy restaurant in New York started practicing radical hospitality. I think we could learn much from their experience. Here are some of my takeaways:

People want:

  • To be seen
  •  To have a sense of belonging
  • To feel welcomed
  • To have a human connection

Some things we can do:

  • Be present, focused on others
  • Slow down
  • Take what you do seriously without taking yourself too seriously
  • Treat people as unique individuals
  • Be “dream weavers”

I know we’re not in the service industry, but we are charged with bringing the good news of the gospel to all. How does it translate? Seems like there are things we can learn here. I crave your thoughts and ideas!

Hospitably yours,

Peggy Massello

Shorefront Legacy Center Exhibit

The Shorefront Legacy Center exhibit is open in our Chapel until the end of February! If you didn't get to see it last Sunday - or you want to see it again - stop in any Sunday in February before or after church, with your small group if you meet at the church, or for our community open houses February 5 and 26, from 1-3 pm. We are privileged to have the opportunity to house this exhibit which showcases the varied and unique bios of a few of the North Shore's Black residents. The accompanying photo is of one of the posters you will see; the text from the poster is quoted below.

As early as the mid-1800s, the Smith family moved from Ontario, Canada to settle in Wilmette. Ellen and her husband, John Smith, were the immediate descendants of runaway slaves who had escaped north to Canada. In Wilmette, they opened a grocery and candy store at 1428 Wilmette Avenue. They also lived on the upper floor with Ellen’s sister and her husband, James Thompson who came from Lake Forest. The business operated until the death of Ellen in 1925.

John H. and Mary Mitchell, another early African American family, lived at 1822 Walnut Avenue (1917-1918 directory) at least until 1925. Their children (one son and one daughter) attended St. Joseph School.

Most African American residents were live-in domestics and were, for the most part, not listed in the directory. However, according to old census records, they were listed and as to whose house they were employed.

AFF Class: "The Forgotten Books of the Bible"

Join Pastor Jeff as we explore five “forgotten” books of the Bible together: Song of Songs, Ruth, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations and Esther. In the Jewish tradition, these five books are known as the “Five Scrolls” because they each play a role during the major religious holidays: Passover, Sukkot, Purim and so on. In the Christian tradition, by contrast, these books are largely overlooked, seldom preached on and come up only occasionally in Bible studies. But they deserve much more attention since they address pressing issues like grief, sexuality, purpose, ethnic identity, and power. Using Robert Williamson Jr.’s recent book, The Forgotten Books of the Bible: Recovering the Five Scrolls for Today, this hybrid class will wrestle with what these books have to teach us today. The class meets in person in the Lounge and virtually via Zoom from 8:45-9:45am on Sundays, from January 8 through February 6 (Zoom Link; Meeting ID: 840 3593 7190; Password: 815640).

Sunday Nursery Care 2nd adult members volunteer needed. To continue offering Nursery Care during Worship services (ages 0-3); we need to ensure 2 adults are in the room each time – due to insurance requirements.

We currently have a professional Nursery Caregiver every Sunday along with 1-2 senior high youth. The 2nd Adult will be in addition to this caregiving group.

New Model: To comply with our insurance and provide a safe and welcoming nursery room, we are asking all Adult members to consider joining a Volunteer 2nd Adult Rotation. Ideally, we will have enough adults in this rotation so that each person only needs to volunteer up to 4 Sundays a year.

Every adult in the Nursery will need to have a current background check (paid for by the Church).
