From our Editor, David Advent:
For this month, we are featuring Black History Month and our annual Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS). The 2023 URS will be held on Thursday, April 6 in the FSU Student Union Ballrooms; with nearly 600 posters, this is one of the largest celebrations of FSU's undergraduate researchers, giving them the space to share the hard work they have completed during their time at FSU. We're so excited to be back in the Student Union Ballrooms and to bring back the Nourishing Creativity Hour, which celebrates the creative and performing arts and their contribution to undergraduate research.
In addition, we are highlighting how FSU and the Tallahassee community is commemorating and celebrating Black History Month. Events like those listed on the BSU Instagram and the Open Mic Night highlight the important work FSU's Black Student Union conducts, while the Black History Arts and Cultural Festival provides a venue to support and celebrate local Black artists.
For the remainder of the newsletter, we pivot to CRE applications, some HSF news, and, finally, our Spring 2023 drop-in hours. We hope that you will join us during those hours to learn more about conducting undergraduate research.
Thanks for reading--as always, if you have any questions or would like to know more, please email us at cre@fsu.edu. Go forth, and research!

The Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) is an annual showcase for undergraduate students from all majors to present their work to the wider community. This year, the URS will be held in person in the Student Union Ballrooms on April 6, 2023. Hundreds of student researchers, including those from the Garnet and Gold Scholar Society, Honors in the Major Program, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP), and independent studies, will present their work as poster and creative presentations.
10:00-11:00, Poster Session One
11:00-11:15, Break One
11:15-12:15, Poster Session Two
12:30-1:45, Lunch and Nourishing Creativity
2:00-3:00, Poster Session Three
3:00-3:15, Break Two
3:15-4:15, Poster Session Four
Are you an undergraduate student looking to present your research? All students at any stage of the research process are eligible to apply to present at the URS! Click the button below to apply to the URS. Applications are due Thursday, February 23, 2023!
In addition, if you have a creative project that you wish to share, consider applying for Nourishing Creativity.
The Undergraduate Research Symposium celebrates research of all kinds from all disciplines. The CRE strives to broaden and include the creative arts into the research conversation. In contrast to the poster presentations at the Symposium, this will be an open-format performative presentation. Your project can be a work in progress, incomplete, or finished. Read excerpts from your creative writing, perform an excerpt from a dance, read scenes from your play, show artwork, sing, or play your instrument. The topics are endless!
The Nourishing Creativity hour will take place between poster sessions at the 23rd annual Undergraduate Research Symposium occurring on Thursday, April 6th, 2023. It is a way for the audience to break from the typical poster format of research symposia and expand the ways in which people present, express, and engage in research.
If you are interested in presenting your creative research project in this format, please fill out the survey (button below) by Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 by midnight.

"Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Under Mr. Williams’ leadership, stepping has evolved into one of America’s cultural exports, touring more than 60 countries across the globe, and the Company now ranks as one of the top ten African-American dance companies in the United States. Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities; traditional African dances; and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience. Performances are much more than dance shows: they integrate songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation.
