Dear Friends and Neighbors,
NYPD Police Officer Adeed Fayaz was laid to rest yesterday, as the city mourned the senseless loss of the 26-year-old hero who leaves behind a wife and two young children.

Once again, we must confront the connection between the easy availability of firearms and the inevitable tragedy that follows. As I recently pointed out, studies clearly show that where there are more guns, there are more gun deaths.

Our nation's gun plague becomes easier to understand when you consider there are now more guns in the United States than people. Statistics show there are 121 firearms in circulation for every 100 residents.

With there already having been nearly 60 mass shootings in the United States so far in 2023, we have to address this problem directly.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney

Jewish Community Relations Council Congressional Breakfast
I attended the Jewish Community Relations Council's annual Congressional breakfast, along with Congresswoman Grace Meng and Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar. The JCRC is an umbrella organization for a number of local Jewish organizations, including the Queens Jewish Community Council. Among the topics discussed was the rise of antisemitic attacks over the past year and the safety and security of the city's Jewish community. I will work on these issues with the JCRC and other Jewish organizations and continue to dedicate resources from my Hate Crimes Bureau to this concern.

Concerned Citizens of Laurelton Monthly Civic Meeting
I enjoyed joining Laurelton residents for a virtual civic meeting to discuss their concerns. Human Trafficking Bureau Chief Jessica Melton made a presentation to help residents recognize trafficking activity. Traffickers can be anyone who forces another person to engage in sex or to work against their will through violence, threats or manipulation. If you need help getting away from an abuser, we connect trafficking survivors to meaningful services. Call (718) 286-6548.
