Student Highlights: Georgia

Each month we will be highlighting an ASOP student who has an interesting outside activity. This month it is Georgia W.

Georgia recently placed first in an ice skating competition, the annual Snow Ball Express, held in St. Joseph. She has been ice skating since she was 3 years old and started competitive ice skating when she was 10. Devoting about 11 hours per week to practice, she currently competes in Free Skate Level 4. She and her coach plan her ice skating routines together.

"Ice skating makes me more graceful," said Georgia. "It makes me happy."

Besides making her happy, Georgia helps others. She teaches younger children how to skate twice each week at the Carriage Club. She said one reason she likes skating is because she "helps the little kids skate."

Six Students Enroll in TIPS

Six ASOP students have enrolled in Johnson County Community College's (JCCC) Transition Into Post Secondary Program (TIPS). The classes began on January 30 and will continue until May 12.

All students who participate in TIPS must be recommended by Denise, the school's career counselor. They are also interviewed by Ashley Graham, Transition Coordinator, College Success, JCCC.

Alumni Highlight:

Jordon A.

ASOP 2017 graduate Jordon A. has been working at Groom Gallery for the past two years. Before her current job, Jordon took three, month-long courses on dog grooming at KC Grooming Academy.

She loves her job as a groomer.

"I love working with animals and the people I work for," Jordon said. "I love all the girls I work with, but I mainly love all the dogs I get to see in a day!"

Jordon always knew she wanted to work with animals, but was not sure what she wanted to do. She said, "My aunt told me to try this out. I was iffy at first, but I am so glad I did!"

Denise, ASOP career counselor, is one of Jordon's satisfied clients and has both of her dogs groomed at Groom Gallery.

Community Service:

Veterans Community Project

ASOP students collected hygiene products for the Veterans Community Project (VCP) during February.

This is the second time this school year that the Student Council encouraged students to help VCP. In December we collected 255 pairs of socks.
