February 2, 2022

Dear friends,

We are still deep in winter here in Maine, with the coldest temperatures in decades due to hit us over the next several days. There is snow on the ground, and the wind can be bitter. Still, even in this time of hibernation, the stirrings of new life to come are among us.

Yesterday was the Celtic feast of Imbolc, a time of honoring the seeds deep in the earth which are beginning to germinate. While spring is still many weeks away, at least in the northern parts of the northern hemisphere, the days continue to stretch their daylight hours, and the promise of warmth and green growing things exists even in this seemingly dormant time.

At The BTS Center, we are both honoring the rest which we know is so essential to our work while also feeling a rising energy for the rich programming we are preparing to bring your way in the coming weeks and months. We are particularly excited for our Refugia Faith event with Debra Rienstra in just a couple of weeks, as well as our Refugia Faith Lenten Retreat coming up in March.

Also coming this spring are an online course for EcoSpiritual Leaders and (for those of you in Maine) an in-person farm Wonder and Wander retreat — keep an eye on future newsletters for more information. Wherever you find yourself in this winter season, we hope you will join us for some of these programs!

With best wishes,

The BTS Center Team

Join us for Refugia Faith:

An Evening with Debra Rienstra!

On Thursday, February 16, The BTS Center will welcome author Debra Rienstra for a conversation on her book, Refugia Faith: Seeking Hidden Shelters, Ordinary Wonders, and the Healing of the Earth. The evening will feature music from Pax Ressler, a talk-back with Rev. Allen Ewing-Merrill (Executive Director of The BTS Center), and a panel of young climate activists and thinkers.

Refugia Faith is informing the work of The BTS Center this spring, and we invite you to consider attending a follow-up, online Lenten retreat we will offer in March, co-facilitated by Rev. Doug Clark and Rev. Eileen Gebbie.

Join us for these Upcoming Programs in the New Year!

Take our Survey

about Chaplaincy for a Climate-Changed World

Rev. Alison Cornish, Program Consultant for The BTS Center, has been working on developing programs around Chaplaincy for a Climate-Changed World. We are now partnering with the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab and Hartford International University to seek input about the emerging field of eco-chaplaincy, or chaplaincy and the environment, in order to learn more about the work and future needs of those called to offer spiritual care effectively and compassionately in a climate-changed world. All three organizations will use the responses from this survey to plan future programs, both academic and experiential, to meet the quickly growing needs of this field.

We would be most grateful for your willingness to participate. We invite you to go this survey and share your thoughts and questions. And, we ask that you please feel free to share this message, and the survey link, with others in your professional circles who you believe would have an interest in this subject.

If you have any questions about this initiative or the survey, please be in touch with Alison Cornish, alison@thebtscenter, or our Program Director, Nicole Diroff, nicole@thebtscenter.org
