YES -- Back to Meeting in Person at SVR Board Meetings
· We will get back to sitting across a table from each other just like we did before the pandemic.
· You are invited to attend in person on Tuesday, September 5th at Fire Station #32 (8890 Roediger Lane - on Hazel between Madison and Sunset, Fair Oaks).
· Thanks to Dick MacFarlane for pursuing this facility again for our region.
Some quick updates on upcoming events
· With Rennsport Reunion 7 at the end of the month, we continue to have some of our ‘oldies and goodies’ ----- breakfast on the first Saturday, Porschettes lunch gathering on September 7th, tour on September 13th (a Wednesday), AX on the 16th at Thunderhill, Porsches and Pints on Thursday, September 21st.
· Dick MacFarlane reports that he now has a wait list for the Sacramento International Auto Show. Thanks to everyone that signed up. Dick also needs some help with the staffing of the SVR table at the show to answer questions about the club. Check with Dick at charity@svr-pca.org.
· And Steve Long has stepped up to help coordinate the SVR attendance at the Cruise Fest sponsored by the California Automobile Museum on Saturday, October 7th (on Fulton Avenue). Check with Steve at membership@svr-pca.org. We are teaming up with the 356CAR group to represent the Porsche community. This is an event of interest (not SVR managed).
· Rick Duste (SVR Tour chair) has added another tour to our schedule. It will be Saturday, October 28th. It will be about 3 hours long and will finish at the El Dorado Saloon (same place as he ended the August 26th tour). Details coming.
· The Mendocino Tour already has 25 cars signed up.
· PCA National Tech Tactics West (held in Southern California) will be held the weekend of November 18-19th. There are 2 identical sessions. Registration opens on October 4th. Cost is $85 a person. Check it out at pca.org/events/tech-tactics-west-2023. Limited to 125 participants each day.
· And we have the Turkey Run TSD Road Rally scheduled for November 18th. This will be a 3-4 hour event that is of the time-speed-distance format and will use the Richta timing and scoring system. See the flyer elsewhere in the DRIFTER.
· And maybe a tour (Polar BearTour) on January 1st. Stay tuned.

Membership in PCA offers numerous benefits, including spectacular national events and comradery at the local level. And let's not forget about the Panorama!
Kudos to all of the SVR members that raise their hands to put on our local events. At times, the process of requiring registration seems overly burdensome for some of the events, but this is for good reason. Any moving car event requires insurance to protect our members from liability, and the national organization provides that for all of our benefit. And in addition a lot of the places we use for our events require some kind of head count so they can prepare for us. Well worth the minor inconvenience of signing up for the events!
This month, our Porschettes are meeting on 9/7 at the Parra's residence. Please reach out to Gail Hawk or Susan Greene if interested in joining a fabulous group of SVR women.
On the 9th, about 25 of us are signed up for the family tour to Red Hawk, where we will enjoy lunch, gaming, and a bit of competitive karting. This will be followed by the mid-week tour on 9/13 to Rio Vista, hosted by Rick Duste.
Autocross this month is a two-day event on the 16th and 17th at Thunderhill, in partnership with the Redwood Region. This event is part of the Zone 7 series. It is down to the wire for many classes where the top spot is still up for grabs (mine included)!
Porsches and Pints will be held at Dust Bowl Brewing located at 9676 Railroad St, Elk Grove this month. Please note - the prior calendars showed an incorrect location! This has been corrected below, highlighted in bold. Our PnP events are at locations all around the Sacramento area. So, if you are nearby, please join us! And if not, Dust Bowl is well worth the drive.
And to wrap up the month, Rennsport Reunion in Monterey is an epic event not to be missed.

PUTTING ON YOUR EVENT

Sacramento Valley Region club events are imagined, created and provided by you, to share with our members. Maybe you have been considering being a host but are not certain where to start. Many of us have had unique experiences and ideas that our Porsche Friends would also enjoy.
Begin with contacting a Board member or Chair that oversees the activity you would like to host. For example, you will contact the Tour Chair if your idea includes a tour route. If you want to host a meal event, or social activity, including museums, wineries, sports games contact the Social Director.
All meals and field trips begin with the Social Director. Tour
Ideas need to be discussed with the Tour Chair. These contacts want to talk and work with you about dates, venue, and other important details, such as Board approval, budget, marketing and registration.

To arrange a tour route event
Activities need minimum of 3 months lead time to accommodate Board budget approval and time to advertise in the Drifter, Facebook and eBlasts.
Some events need to be booked a year in advance. An example is the annual Christmas party, which is setup at least 12 months prior to event date. Sporting events are another example of long lead booking. Rivercats games need at least six months to set a date. Museums are another venue that need longer range planning.
SVR’s calendar needs more great activities so let’s hear from all you “Hosts to Be”.

EDH Saloon Tour - Wrap Up

25 cars and their energetic drivers explored a variety of roads enroute to the El Dorado Saloon and Grill in El Dorado Hills.
We departed EDH Town Center paralleling Highway 50 before turning northwest on Cedar Ravine Road. Six miles of twisty, ultra smooth, traffic-free roads among the trees, climbing up to enter old town Placerville from the back. Cedar Ravine was a hands down favorite of the group. Try it sometime on your own, it’s worth the drive to get there. Continuing northwest on Cold Springs Road we passed unique wineries and vineyards before joining Lotus Road which took us down to Coloma alongside the south fork of the American River.
A pitstop at the Sutter Mill parking lot, operated by the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, offered some of the cleanest and nicest restrooms appreciated by all. Kudos to the Park staff on their above average facilities maintenance. Time to put the Porsches through their paces as we drove down CA 49 to loop back up CA 193. We crossed the river at Chili Bar and climbed the super twisty highway with its never-ending switchbacks, some a full 180 degrees. Reaching the top, mild curves brought us to Black Oak Mine Road where we connected with Green Valley Rd to by-pass Georgetown and re-enter CA 193 heading down the mountain to Cool.
A short jog on CA 49 over to Salmon Falls Rd which took us down to our lunch spot. Proprietors Ron and Kate Martin, who own a white 2007 Porsche 997 by the way, and their staff did a bang-up job allowing the group order off their menu and pay individually. Great food, music on Fridays, TVs galore. Inside or deck dining. If you live in the area, you should try them out.
Next tour Wednesday September 13th to The Point Restaurant in Rio Vista.

My Sports Car Journey
#2, The Glas 1300 GT (plus a TR-3)

I was in the passenger seat of my MG Midget as we “coast” at about 60 MPH, toward a bunch of cars stopped on the freeway ahead of us. Lori, driving a stick-shift for the first time, had the clutch peddle smashed to the floor attempting to stop the car. Fortunately, the handbrake was located between us. I grabbed it and pulled with both hands. The rear wheels locked up and we spun clockwise onto the median next to the fast lane. I eased up on the handbrake to stop the spin and we ran, trunk first, into a cement barrier. Miraculously, no other cars were involved and no one was hurt. All the damage was to the sheet metal of the MG, missing the exhaust pipe on the left side, the fuel filler on the right, and the fuel tank itself set deeper into the bodywork. We were able to drive home. I did the driving. The MG was repairable and I continued dating Lori. A few years later, we were married, and she became quite proficient stirring the gears in the many 4-speed and 5-speed cars we owned.
In 1965, I traded in the MG for a Glas 1300 GT. It came with a 1289 cc overhead-cam, 4 cylinder cross-flow engine putting out 85 HP at 5800 RPM. (A Glas 1700 GT was introduced later with a 1682 cc engine and 100 HP at 5500 RPM.) Fastbacks were new back then and many people asked me if my Glas was “the new Porsche” as the 911 was also introduced in early 1965, but there were some significant differences between the two German cars. The Glas cost $3200 while the 911 cost $6500, the Glas had a water-cooled front engine and the 911, of course, had an air-cooled rear engine; but the most significant difference, in my opinion, was that the Glas had a toothed fiberglass timing belt. (In 1961, Hans Glas GmbH was the first to use a timing belt in a mass-production vehicle. In 1966, Pontiac became the first U.S. car company to use a timing belt.)
Lori and I were students at San Jose State, but our families were in Southern California. The Glas made countless trips up and down Highway 101 (no Hwy 5 in those days) and its’ many parallel and delightful sideroads. Highways 25 and 33 were a lot of fun; but back to my timing belt story. Unlike timing chains, timing belts use teeth to ensure the camshaft(s) stays properly synchronized with the crankshaft. Fiberglass timing belts are as strong as steel and they rarely break, but the teeth can, and do, strip. (Consider the timing belt to be the Glas equivalent of the Porsche intermediate shaft bearing.) This happened to me and I had the car towed to a local foreign auto repair shop. A new belt would have to be ordered and a couple bent valves replaced, but fortunately, no serious engine damage. It was going to take a few days so the shop owner offered me a very well-used Triumph TR-3 to drive in the meantime.
I had business about 70 miles away so I took the TR-3. The radio was missing, with just a bunch of loose wires dangling from under the dash, like tentacles searching for something to grab. But the top was down and the sound of the exhaust was music to my ears. Who needs a radio in a rag-top anyway? On the return trip, in the middle of nowhere, the car slowed to a creep and I coasted to the side of the road. The engine was running, but when I pushed the accelerator, nothing happened. This was before the days of cell phones, it was getting dark, I had no tools, and there were no other cars in sight to flag down, nor even a nearby farmhouse that might offer a phone. Hell, it wasn’t even my car! What should I do? What could I do?
