Outdoor Ice Rink Now Open

With a break in the snow and cooler temps last week, crews from the Howelsen Ice Arena were able to put the final touches on the free community outdoor ice rink. The rink, which is now located next to the Howelsen Ice Arena in the Rodeo Grounds parking lot, is now open for public skating. Ice lovers will be able to skate to their hearts content on this fun ice sheet made entirely from hard packed snow and frozen water. With only one ice sheet available this season, users are asked to be nice and share the ice. The outdoor rink will be open from dawn until 10 PM daily.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Winter Carnival Traffic Plan

The city is unveiling a new detour plan for the Winter Carnival street events to better serve US40 thru-traffic, enhance access for emergency vehicles, and improve traffic circulation over the festive weekend. Instead of utilizing Oak Street solely, the new route will use a circular configuration that sees US40 eastbound traffic diverted onto Yampa Street and US40 westbound traffic onto Oak Street. The city has hired a traffic control company out of Grand Junction to assist in running the detour. To learn more about the detour as well as other closures and impacts, check out the press release and city website.

Upper Yampa River Releases

We want to acknowledge our partners at the Colorado Water Trust for keeping the Yampa River flowing this summer and helping to preserve the health and viability of our precious local amenity. For 64 days this past summer and early fall, Colorado Water Trust purchased and released 3,603 acre-feet (1.17 billion gallons) of water to boost flows in the Upper Yampa River during critical low flows. The boosted flows accounted for more than half of the Yampa River in downtown Steamboat Springs for 10 days and for more than one-third of the Yampa River's flow for 28 days. Without this added water, the Yampa River may have dropped as low as 34 cubic feet per second (cfs). We greatly appreciate the continued support from the Colorado Water Trust and other organizations to help protect and preserve the Yampa River.
