Join us in this celebratory month as we recognize people of color for their achievements throughout history and their important role in shaping the United States.

Following the death of George Floyd in 2020, we felt the desire to share the following statement on what our organizational stance is, and always will be, for all people.

As disAbility Connections reflects on the current social climate, we remember that the Independent Living Movement owes much to the civil rights movement. Persons with disabilities took inspiration from the brave individuals of the civil rights movement who fought for their rights in society and recognized in themselves the strength to work for equal treatment.

disAbility Connections affirms it will continue to serve the community as an organization striving to advance the independence, productivity and full inclusion of all who live with disabilities. disAbility Connections will never treat someone poorly because of who they are and will continue to work for justice for all.

Home Ramp Program

We are now accepting Jackson county resident applications for the upcoming ramp season!

Between May and October we want to build approximately 6-8 ramps for people that need them at their homes. All approved applicants must meet income and disability requirements.

Ramp recipients pay a 25% co-pay for ramp materials upon completion of their ramp.

For other questions, information to apply for a ramp, volunteer to help build (usually takes one day), or donate towards ramp materials, please call 517-998-3091 or email Lora@disabilityconnect.org

snow and slush in a curb cut block street access from a sidewalk on a snowy sunny day

Snow Blocked

Last month we reminded you about the importance of accessible parking and the laws within the ADA for proper snow removal. This month we are sharing a much needed, and very frequently missed, portion of snow removal and maintenance.

The clearing of curb-cuts where sidewalks and streets intersect should be addressed. When they are not properly taken care of, people are forced with tough decisions between personal choices and risks involved.

Possible Consequences

  • Get stuck
  • Fall from chair
  • Equipment breaking
  • Forced to use road
  • Hit by car
  • Late or miss appointments/work
  • Skin damage from prolonged exposure while trying to navigate city
  • Physical injury

For the safety and well being of all people - please share the importance to fully clear the snow on sidewalks and the crosswalks/curb-cuts with your neighbors, city council's, business owners and others in our communities.
