NHMA Leadership Fellowship


The NHMA Leadership Fellowship is a training program for U.S. licensed physicians at least 5 years out of training with significant leadership experience, who are committed to the work of improving public health. Fellows will participate in weekly virtual trainings facilitated by Core Faculty from May 2023 through July 2023 every Friday, and present policy papers at NHMA’s Annual Conference in 2024. These weekly Friday afternoon webinars from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. ET will consist of expert speakers from public health, media, advocacy, and leaders from different stakeholders in the public health arena to address leadership skills and health disparities in the Hispanic community.


The application deadline is January 14, 2023.

As flu-related hospitalizations soar to record early season levels, the American Heart Association is concerned many people will be caught off-guard by this health threat and urges prompt vaccination against the virus. According to a survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the American Heart Association in July, more than half of U.S. adults (54%) said they were not very or not at all concerned about the upcoming flu season.

Centene Corporation announced the Centene Charitable Foundation and its Texas health plan, Superior HealthPlan, have invested $7.9 million in a new, state-of-the-art multipurpose community center in Uvalde, Texas. In partnership with Community Health Development, Inc, a federally qualified health center, the community center will serve as a whole health resource for the entire Uvalde community and its surrounding region.

Chapter Chatter

This past weekend, the NHMA Nevada Chapter celebrated the anniversary of its establishment! This year alone, our amazing Nebraska Chapter joined us at our 25th Annual Conference, hosted NHMA's first-ever Community Soccer & Vaccine Clinic, and helped distribute vaccines on the ground in their communities.

NHMA's D.C. Metro Chapter was proud to host their holiday party on December 8th, 2022 with NHMA President & CEO, Dr. Elena Rios, who highlighted the Let's Stop HIV Together Campaign, supported by the CDC, the All of Us Research Program, and the NHMA Vaccinate for All Campaign.

Legislative Update


The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) recently supported two major bills in Congress and worked to advance a variety of advocacy priorities enumerated below.


  • NHMA supported the CARE for LONG COVID Act, sponsored by Senator Kaine, which would provide funding to improve research on long COVID diagnosis and treatment, as well as access to care services for those with symptoms.


  • NHMA supported the AHEAD Act of 2022 (Assessing Health Evaluations to Advance Decision-making Act of 2022), sponsored by Senator Cardin and introduced on Dec. 1, 2022. This bill will provide for a study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on the potential benefits on population health outcomes of incorporating into the Federal legislative process tools that measure the impacts of proposed legislation (including in areas outside of health care) on health and health disparities. The AHEAD Act of 2022 is an important tool for evaluating the effectiveness of public health interventions/programs and gaining insights into the social determinants of health that impact Latinos ...
