Teacher Spotlight – Elsa Grivas
This month, our April Spotlight shines on Elsa Grivas, a dedicated Craft Guild member since 2009. Elsa is a Metals Fabrication instructor for both Beginning and Intermediate levels and has served on the Board for six years, currently holding the position of Treasurer. Around The Guild, she’s also known for her skills with a hammer and drill, playing a key role in several of The Guild’s relocation projects.
A retired banking and accounting executive—experience that makes her an excellent Treasurer—Elsa has always embraced creativity. She has explored painting, watercolor, and photography, but her love for jewelry led her on a new artistic journey. A longtime attendee of the Santa Fe Indian Market for over 30 years, she has collected unique pieces from Native artists. With a big laugh, she recalls, “I thought by making my own jewelry, it would be less expensive!”
Since joining The Guild, Elsa has expanded her skills and developed a distinctive style influenced by her Santa Fe experiences. Her work incorporates intricate techniques such as keum boo, chasing and repoussé, beading, appliqué, and wire weaving.
As an instructor, Elsa is generous and encouraging, always excited to see students complete their pieces. Over the years, she has watched The Guild grow from a struggling artist nonprofit to a nationally recognized creative community. Inspired by the passion and dedication of its members and leadership, she remains committed to its ongoing success.
