The U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) announced that beginning on 12/12/2022, individuals who have applied for U.S. Naturalization will automatically have their U.S. Permanent Resident cards (green cards) extended for a 24-month period. This means that individuals who apply for naturalization near the expiration date of their green cards, will not have to renew their green cards using Form I-90.
Presentation of the Form N-400 Receipt Notice along with the expired green card will be valid, evidence of unexpired Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) status, as well as a valid identity and employment authorization document under List A of Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9), if presented before the expiration of the 24-month extension period provided in the N-400 Receipt Notice.
This guidance applies to all N-400 applications filed on or after December 12, 2022.
