Share the Plate with New Futures
During the fourth quarter of 2024, UUCH will be sharing our plate proceeds with New Futures Family Lodge. All plate proceeds received from the Thursday before the first Sunday through the Saturday after the first Sunday will be split with New Futures. In October, this includes plate donations received from October 3rd through October 12th.
New Futures Family Lodge is a 13-room 501(c)3 (non-profit) homeless shelter located in Huntsville, Alabama that supports homeless families looking to regain stability and reshape their lives. New Futures is the only homeless shelter in North Alabama that allows families to reside in a unit together to maintain healthy relationships to allow families the opportunity to thrive as they seek out permanent housing and financial security.
New Futures relies on the community to help support and fund their efforts, from providing food and basic needs for our residents, to engaging residents in life skills workshops and case management and aiding in transitioning towards a “new future” of stability and consistency.
For more information, please visit their website (https://newfuturesinc.com/).
Please consider giving generously to this important local organization.

Board Report September 25, 2024
The UUCH Board met via Zoom for its regularly scheduled meeting on September 25th.
The Board adopted an updated Retirement Plan for all eligible employees, as is required by the UUA every 10 years.
The Treasurer, Khoe Tran, reported that the church finances are good with expenses below, and income above, predictions for this point in the year. Due to a budget overage identified by the Finance Committee, the Board approved via email using some of the funds for the purchase of new tablecloths, some publicity and outreach activities, expenses associated with Rev. Jaimie’s sabbatical, and added a contingency expenditures line item to the budget as a placeholder for unexpected expenses that may occur during the remainder of the 24-25 fiscal year.
Discussion was held regarding the need to understand the actual expenses of various UUCH activities, which in-kind donations may mask. Plans were laid out to gather information and possibly offer reimbursement for some purchases, as well as to encourage the appropriate committees to budget for the expenses rather than planning for in-kind donations to make the events possible.
Due to a busy fall, Side With Love t-shirt orders will be deferred until early 2025, at which point a sliding scale for purchasing the t-shirts will be enacted. Because the shirts are also outreach/publicity, the Board agrees it is desirable for anyone who wants a shirt to be able to get one. Plans were discussed for making that goal possible.
The next regularly scheduled Board meeting will be held in person, October 30th 2024

Habitat for Humanity Home Build
Wall raising has been completed at the Fazzingo/Turner house at 216 Lake Drive in Huntsville! UUCH members Khoe Tran and Brad Korb helped raise the walls last week. The roof trusses were delivered earlier this week and the contractor has begun the installation.
Your help is needed! Volunteers will be working at the site most Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays depending on weather and subcontractor activity.
All volunteers must take a volunteer orientation class that is given virtually every week. The dates of the training vary, so please contact Brad at social.justice@uuch.org for the latest schedule.
If you have any questions or are interested in helping out, please email social.justice@uuch.org

Ghosts Over the Boiler book discussion
Ghosts Over the Boiler is a unique book about a decades-old organization, Project Hope to
Abolish the Death Penalty, that was founded and operated by people facing capital punishment in Alabama. We were given a talk by the author, Katie Owens-Murphy, last February if this sounds familiar. Ghosts Over the Boiler is a curated collection of poetry, visual art, photographs, essays, creative writings, and other archival materials that have emerged from Alabama's death row. This group was founded at Holman Correctional Facility and has been operating autonomously since 1989 toward its mission to abolish the death penalty in Alabama and in the nation.
We will be discussing this book after the Sunday services OCTOBER 13 and 27 (NOTE: this will be after choir practice). If you are interested in abolishing capital punishment, start reading this book now and plan on joining us for discussion this fall! Please rsvp to adult.re@uuch.org if you are planning to attend.

Circle of Candles
Jaylee Kordosky lit a candle of Sorrow: "Someone stole our free LGBTQ closet two weeks before Pride. Please send vibes that we find it in working condition before Pridefest."
Paul & Bridgit DeMoor lit a candle of both Sorrow and Joy: "We ask for prayers for our Cherokee friend, FOY, who had to visit the emergency room, and miss the Pow-Wow. We went, participating a pray experience for FOY, and enjoyed it."
Bryan Walls lit a candle of Joy and Concern: "Thankful family is okay after Helene. Diane's sister's house was flooded in Florida, my brother's rental house was flooded in Asheville (the renter was rescued from the roof), and he and this family in South Carolina are all without power. "
Nancy FInley lit a candle of Joy: "My daughter is home from New York, along with her friends, Austin and Brittany."

Little Food Pantry
Signups for the LFP have slowed to a trickle unless you are filling it without signing up in the signup genius. It’s hard to know. Our LFP is a much needed service to the neighborhood. Fill it with nutritious foods. Folks rarely take garbanzo beans or lentils (even though they are nutritious). Let’s try to keep the pantry going! Please, if you are able to fill it up, please note your name in the Genius. Also, you can bring non perishables to church, as there are baskets. A big thank you to all who do contribute!
