Governor's Mental Health Newsletter

November 17th is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, an event in which survivors of suicide loss come together to find connection, understanding, and hope through their shared experience. In-person events occur nationwide and are organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. All gatherings will include resources for coping with grief and will feature a documentary screening on suicide loss. Virtual events are also available. These events provide an opportunity for survivors to find comfort and healing among a community of understanding individuals.

The Wyoming Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is hosting support groups for survivors of suicide loss throughout the state. These events offer an opportunity for survivors of suicide loss to come together to find connection, understanding, and hope through their shared experience. Each group will meet on Saturday, November 23rd; see below for locations and times.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Winter has officially come back to Wyoming; with it, are shorter days and reduced exposure to sunlight. During this time, many people may experience the "winter blues," a temporary change in mood during the fall and winter months. Despite certain similarities, winter blues are not the same as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Please use the infographic below and visit the link to learn when you may need to seek out professional help.

Saving Lives of Veterans, their Families, and Communities with the Columbia Protocol

The American Legion has partnered with the Columbia Lighthouse Project (formerly the Center for Suicide Risk Assessment) to provide valuable suicide prevention training across the Legion. The Columbia Lighthouse Project aims to save lives worldwide by making the protocol’s use universal. We also help people integrate the Columbia Protocol into a broader suicide prevention program.

We are excited by our partnership and look forward to hosting this training and deploying the Columbia Protocol across the American Legion and to your friends, families, and communities.

As part of The American Legion #BeTheOne mission to end veteran suicide, we have joined forces with Columbia University to develop training for those who want to learn more about interacting and responding with veterans who may be in crisis.
