Two of our families were able to move directly into their own housing from Easton's Promise (our family shelter) this month! While they won't be completing the full S4 Program (Shelter, Stability, Support, Success), we are thrilled that they have been given this opportunity for a new beginning!

We have already welcomed two new families into Easton's Promise. A family of five and a family of two both joined us this week. They are eager to begin their journey towards self-sufficiency!

Fifteen of our children headed back to school this week. Thanks to the Billy Scott Fund for making sure each and every child started the school year with all of the supplies they needed!

Please help us give hearty congratulations to the most recent graduates of the "Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin' By Program!" This 13-week course teaches our guests about the root causes of poverty, the hidden societal rules that can prevent someone from progressing away from poverty, how to identify and maximize the resources available to them, and much more. We are so proud of all of our graduates, and are always astounded by their discussions about how much they are impacted by what they have learned.

We will also be capping off August by presenting completion certificates to seven new graduates from Job Readiness class at Evelyn's Place (our singles shelter)!

As we make sure that our guests have all of the tools they need to be successful, it is also important that our staff continues to expand their knowledge so that we can give our guests the best possible experience. They have been very busy this month!

Case Managers DeWayne Camper and Roland Groce were among the graduates from the "Getting Ahead" program. They took the class so that they could become facilitators in the future. In addition, staff has attended the following trainings: How Families Can Navigate Addiction Treatment, GIS Mapping System Training, What Survivors Want You to Know (trauma and domestic violence), Marijuana in the Workplace, and Homelessness Trainings.

Meet Josh, one of the single guests at Evelyn's Place!

In addition to being a kind and lovely human being, Josh is an exceptionally talented musician who writes, plays, and sings his own original songs. We hope you will take a few minutes to listen to Josh's story. Make sure to watch until the end to hear him play a special song about moving out of the darkness and into the light.

Josh is hoping to find a better quality guitar so his music can sound even better. If you or someone you know has a guitar you would like to donate, please contact us at 410-690-3120!

Josh's Story

This is all possible because of your generous support! Our guests can feel that you are behind them, and they are truly grateful for all you do to help them on their path to Success!

In-Kind Donations Save TIS and Our Guests Thousands of Dollars Annually

While our guests work with their case managers to enroll in the Independence Card program, the card does not cover necessities like cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and more. With the increase in costs due to inflation, this puts a strain on our guests' already-tight budgets. Our staff makes sure that everyone's needs are met, but with two full houses and 16 off-site apartments, ensuring a sufficient supply of household items at all times can be an expensive undertaking.

We are so grateful for our wonderful community that so often heeds our call when we reach out asking for these items. Your generosity saves TIS and our guests tens of thousands of dollars each year.

We will begin including a list of current needs each month in our newsletter. You can also check our Facebook and Donate pages every Wednesday for the most up-to-date list of needs. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Spotlight on Team TIS!

Whether providing delicious and nutritious meals, donating school supplies for our youngest guests, house-sitting, stuffing envelopes, or representing TIS in the community, Team TIS has had a busy August!

Spotlight on Team TIS August 2023

To become a TIS Volunteer, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Nancy Cummings, at 410-690-3120 or nancycummings@talbotinterfaithshelter.org.

We would like to shine an extra bright spotlight on two very special members of Team TIS this month!

On August 6th, the Pizza Club hosted a pop-up cake pop and lemonade stand in Muskrat Park in St. Michaels to benefit TIS. When all was said and done, they had raised an amazing $400 in support of our mission! We are incredibly honored and so proud of these young people for coming up with this wonderful idea. They have already learned at such a young age that everyone can do something to help others - you just have to find a way that works for you! Thank you, Pizza Club!

Speaking of finding your own special way to help others, our incredibly talented friend, Jenn Schmidt, is once again participating in the Oxford Picket Fence Auction to raise money to help provide our guests with Shelter, Stability, Support, and a path to Success! Jenn's gorgeous piece of art is on display at Mystery Loves Company bookstore in Oxford until the Auction at the Oxford Community Center on September 9th.
