Here are this week's scriptures for study and meditation:
2 Chronicles 24:17-22 After Jehoida's death, however, the leaders of Judah came and bowed before the king, and the king listened to them. They abandoned the temple of the Lord, their ancestors' God, and worshipped the sacred poles and idols. Anger came upon Jerusalem and Judah as a consequence of their sin, and though God sent prophets to them to bring them back to the Lord and to warn them, they refused to listen. Then the spirit of God enwrapped Zechariah son of the priest Jehoida. Standing before the people, he told them, "This is what God says: Why do you defy the Lord's commands and keep yourselves from prospering? Because you have abandoned the Lord, he has abandoned you!" But the people plotted against Zechariah, and at the king's command stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord's temple. King Jehoash failed to remember the loyalty that Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, had shown him and murdered Jehoida's son, who cried out as he lay dying, "May the Lord see and seek vengeance!"
Psalm 27:5-9 Because he will shelter me in his own dwelling in troubling times; he will hide me in a secret place in his own tent; he will set me up high, safe on a rock. Now my head is higher than the enemies surrounding me, and I will offer sacrifices in God's tent--sacrifices with shouts of joy! I will sing and praise the Lord. Lord, listen to my voice when I cry out--have mercy on me and answer me! Come, my heart says, seek God's face. Lord, I do seek your face! Please don't hide it from me! Don't push your servant aside angrily--you have been my help! God who saves me, don't neglect me! Don't leave me all alone!
Acts 7:59-8:3 As they battered him with stones, Stephen prayed, " Lord Jesus, accept my life!" Falling to his knees, he shouted, "Lord, don't hold this sin against them!" Then he died. Saul was in full agreement with Stephen's murder. At that time, the church in Jerusalem began to be subjected to vicious harassment. Everyone except the apostles was scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria. Some pious men buried Stephen and deeply grieved over him. Saul began to wreak havoc against the church. Entering one house after another, he would drag off both men and women and throw them into prison.
Luke 1:41-45 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. With a loud voice she blurted out, "God has blessed you among all women, and he has blessed the child you carry. Why do I have this honor, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. Happy is she who believed that the Lord would fulfill the promises he made to her."
