On Friday, Dec. 16, the Virginia Department of Transportation alongside its state and regional partners, hosted a ceremonial ribbon cutting event to celebrate the design and construction of the Skiffes Creek Connector Project.
The project's most visible component -- the addition of a one-mile section of new roadway -- opened to traffic in mid-November. The roadway, known officially as Green Mount Parkway, was designed to improve the daily travel experience for motorists across the Peninsula and to enhance the regional and statewide delivery of goods.
With the addition of this new connection, commercial trucks servicing businesses such as the Walmart Distribution Center, Haynes Distribution Center, Carter Machinery, Ball Metal Beverage Packing and others nearby, have a faster and safer route to access Interstate 64 as they travel toward Virginia's port and their final destinations. This new route removes the need for these trucks to travel miles out of the way, at low speeds through congested residential area and school zones and provides a more direct route.
Additionally, this route provides a critical connection between identified evacuation routes and improves the region's efficiency in times of emergency evacuation.
Design-build contractor team Shirley Consulting Company and Dewberry began work on the Skiffes Creek Connector Project in early 2020.
