The YMCA of the Chesapeake is pleased to announce the return of its annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28. The 2024 event will be hosted virtually and in person at seven locations across the Eastern Shore.

Three attorneys and a law firm were honored for their dedication to providing free legal services to clients who can’t afford an attorney.

CAMBRIDGE, MD. — Historians at the Dorchester County Historical Society are stumped by a mysterious motorized machine that has been sitting in their storage since the 1990s. Now, researchers are turning to the public for help in identifying the unusual device.
The machine, which features two spinning objects resembling rolling pins and a ceramic countertop, has left society members puzzled. According to Zoe Phillips, executive director of the historical society, it could be close to 100 years old—although the motor appears to be a later addition.
"So we think that it is something that has been here since the '90s," Phillips said.
Records indicate that a similar contraption was donated by the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society. However, no photographs confirm the exact details of that donation, adding to the mystery surrounding its origin and purpose.

History and mystery: Haunted High Street tour shares Cambridge folklore |
CAMBRIDGE — Walking past the grand, historic High Street homes on a sunny day, ghosts might not be top of mind.
But after the sun has set, Chesapeake Ghost Tours brings history lovers and thrill seekers alike on a journey down the haunted street, telling stories of local history and strange happenings.
Mindie Burgoyne, founder of Chesapeake Ghost Tours, considers Cambridge’s High Street the most haunted street in Maryland. She said those that come on the tour will be “entertained by the mystery and informed by the history.”
The tour — which was primarily developed using the folklore collections at Salisbury University’s Edward H. Nabb Research Center, books, newspaper articles and personal interviews — begins right outside the Dorchester County Circuit Courthouse. Guides take tourgoers down High Street toward the Choptank River before looping around and coming back up the street. The tour ends at the graveyard attached to Christ Episcopal Church.

Science on the shore—Horn Point Laboratory |
In future columns, I am going to write about local scientists and how their research applies to our environment on the Eastern Shore.
I begin this series at Horn Point Laboratory. Horn Point is one of four laboratories of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES). Horn Point currently has 20 professors, and 30 Master and PhD candidate students. It also offers a summer program for undergraduate students. The goal is to educate future scientists to use their experience and knowledge to expand the influence of environmental science.
I met with Dr. Mike Sieracki, the director of Horn Point Laboratory for an overview of the work being done at Horn Point. Dr. Sieracki’s area of expertise is plankton. Plankton can be plants (phytoplankton) or animals (zooplankton), and refers to organisms that are carried along by the water’s currents. Dr. Sieracki studied plankton ecology, and the effects of climate change on plankton and the marine food webs they support.
The overall mission of Horn Point Laboratory is to conduct research that solves problems in the environment, with a special focus on the local ecosystems. It is a joint mission to push the boundary of knowledge and then apply that knowledge to real world problems.
The research is both vast and varied. While Horn Point scientists do a lot of different types of research, most of the work can be categorized into six categories: Biogeochemistry, Ecology, Physical oceanography, Computer modeling, the Oyster Hatchery, and Restoration Ecology.

Lung Cancer Screenings at TidalHealth
The American Lung Association identifies lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. In fact, it claims more lives annually than colon, breast and prostate cancer combined. If you are currently smoking or have a history of smoking, your risk of lung cancer increases significantly. CT scanning can detect small nodules, a possible indicator of lung cancer, which a traditional chest x-ray might not see.
Interested in learning more?
TidalHealth and Peninsula Imaging will be providing Saturday lung cancer screening scans on November 9 in Salisbury and Seaford using low dose computed tomography (CT) technology during National Lung Cancer Screening Day.
Lung screenings will be held in Salisbury at Peninsula Imaging in the Woodbrooke Medical Complex (1655 Woodbrooke Drive) and at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional (100 E. Carroll Street). In Delaware, screenings will be offered at the TidalHealth Mears Campus (100 Rawlings Drive) in Seaford. Screenings will be held from 8 am to noon and will require registration by calling 410-543-7006 for TidalHealth and 410-749-1123 for Peninsula Imaging.
Most insurances are accepted, and eligibility requirements will be shared prior to signing up. Those without health insurance coverage are still encouraged to call and speak with a TidalHealth representative as there may be resources available to help with the cost.
These Saturday sessions are being added to assist people who might not be able to attend regular weekday screenings that are offered by TidalHealth throughout the year. To learn more about the weekday screenings or to register, please call the TidalHealth Thoracic Oncology Program at 410-543-7012.

TidalHealth's Free Bariatric Seminar
Start your weight-loss journey today
Are you looking to lose weight and kickstart your journey to a healthier, happier life? If so, consider attending a free bariatric seminar hosted by TidalHealth.
These informative sessions, focusing primarily on surgical interventions, also present a pathway to the medical weight loss program for those who find surgery isn’t the right fit for them.
TidalHealth’s free bariatric seminars occur twice a month, with sessions scheduled on the second Thursday at 6 pm and the last Saturday at 9 am.
Led by experienced surgeons, these seminars provide attendees with the chance to meet and engage with a surgeon before leaving the facility.
The duration of the seminars varies, typically lasting between one to two hours, contingent on the number of questions raised by participants. Patients may attend alone or bring a support person.
Attending the seminar serves as a prerequisite for entering the surgical weight-loss program. Patients cannot proceed to consultations with a surgeon without first participating in this informative session.
To register, call 302-297-2412.
