Welcome to fall, supporters of The Foundation Learning Center! Read about all the fun things we did during the first quarter of the 2024-2025 school year.

October is AAC Awareness Month!

Did you know you use Alternative and Augmentative Communication every day? From texting to giving someone a thumbs up, AAC is the way we communicate beyond speaking. Our students with autism benefit from a variety of modalities when it comes to expressing themselves and communicating their interests and needs.

At The Foundation Learning Center, staff and students use AAC to supplement and compensate for verbal speech, helping our students feel seen and heard.

Autism Speaks Walk

FLC is thrilled to announce that we raised over $2,000 for the annual Autism Speaks Walk in Washington, D.C. through a fantastic school effort! The outpouring of generosity at our school car wash not only helped us reach our fundraising goal, but also showcased the incredible spirit of our community. On Saturday, October 19, over 15 enthusiastic participants, including two families, joined our team for the Autism Speaks Walk, demonstrating our commitment to raising awareness and supporting individuals with autism. Together, we are making a meaningful impact!

River Ecology Boat Tour

In October, our students participated in a River Ecology Boat Tour at Patuxent River Park. During this exciting boat ride, they explored the Patuxent River’s wetlands, wildlife, and history. Students learned to identify common plants and animals, gain insights into current research conducted by park staff, and discuss important environmental safety issues crucial for protecting the ecosystem. Following the boat ride, the class enjoyed a picnic at Patuxent River Park before heading back to school.

Enhancing the Learning Experience!

Our students are taking their learning to the next level by integrating technology into our new, specialized curriculum, TeachTown. At The Foundation Learning Center, our classrooms use this award-winning special education adapted core curriculum to provide equitable and inclusive access to the general education curriculum and the individualized interventions that support students’ success.

The result? We are seeing increased learning engagement and enthusiasm! Whether using tablets for interactive lessons, engaging with educational games, or collaborating on projects through online platforms, this technology is sparking students’ curiosity and helping them develop essential digital skills that will serve them well in the future. As they navigate this tech-infused curriculum, our students are more motivated than ever, making learning both fun and meaningful!

Back to School Night

We recently hosted our annual Back to School Night Block Party and it was a wonderful success! Families had the opportunity to meet our dedicated staff, explore their children’s classrooms, and learn more about the personalized supports we provide for each student. We also had a lot of fun! Thank you to everyone who attended and made the event a memorable start to the school year.

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

Autumn is here, and nothing says fall like a trip to the Pumpkin Patch. To celebrate the season, students enjoyed a fun-filled and educational trip to Montpelier Farms. We’re so proud of how curious and engaged our students were and look forward to continuing this tradition each year.
