National Church Leader to Preach at Presbytery Meeting

The Rev. Shavon Starling-Louis will lead worship at the 113th meeting of Presbytery of the James. Shavon and co-moderator Ruth Santana-Grace were elected in 2022 to lead the 225th General Assembly of PC(USA) through June 2024. We are excited to host this leader of the church in our presbytery and look forward to the words she will bring us. In addition to her role with the General Assembly, Shavon is senior pastor at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. She received a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary.

Youth Ministry Conversation

Presbyter Barbara Chalfant invites interested adults and youth to a conversation about youth ministry on Monday, March 6. During the meeting, which will be held at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom, participants will discuss what youth ministry from the presbytery should look like. Is it a traditional youth council or some other form of organization? What goals and direction for youth ministry should it have? Request Zoom credentials by emailing office@presbyteryofthejames.org.

Historical Society Blog Highlights African-American Presbyterians

The Presbyterian Historical Society kicked off 2023 by introducing a new blog series that features African American Presbyterians throughout the denomination’s history. The series, "African American Leaders," is published the first week of each month on the PHS website. PHS hopes the blog series will inform Presbyterians about a group that remains under-represented in the annals of Presbyterian history.
