Pastoral Notes

Gregory Allen Pirkle, son of Anita Pirkle, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 16 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Funeral plans have not yet been made. Anita is grateful for the support and prayers of her Holy Innocents’ Church Family.

Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord;

And let light perpetual shine upon him.

May his soul, and the souls of all the departed,

through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding: Deal graciously with Anita and her family in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges

During Sunday school this school year, our 6th-12th graders will dive deep into the teachings of three Major Prophets, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. These prophets, though they lived centuries ago, offer powerful lessons that are still profoundly relevant today. Their messages are not just historical artifacts but living words that speak directly to the challenges our students face in their daily lives.

For instance, the Major Prophets can have a profound impact on the decision-making of today’s teens. When it comes to issues like drinking alcohol or vaping, Isaiah’s warnings against following the crowd and straying from righteousness can help students understand the importance of making choices that honor their values rather than succumbing to peer pressure. Ezekiel’s emphasis on personal responsibility can encourage teens to take ownership of their decisions, understanding that their actions have consequences not only for themselves but for those around them. Lastly, Daniel’s story is particularly inspiring for teenagers facing pressure to conform. Despite being in a foreign land with different values, Daniel remained true to his beliefs. This can empower students to resist negative influences and stay true to the principles they learn in Sunday school and at home.

By studying the Major Prophets, our teens will not only deepen their understanding of biblical history but also equip themselves with the tools to navigate their lives with wisdom and integrity. The lessons they learn will empower them to make positive choices, resist negative influences, and uphold their values, just as the prophets did in their time. I strongly encourage all our 6th-12th graders to make an effort to attend Sunday school whenever possible.

Compact Wisdom Formation Series

The joke that Episcopalians don’t know the Bible well is getting old. So, let’s start with the shortest books together. By mid-October, we can cross off 20 books from our list—almost a third of the Bible! As we delve into these brief yet profound books, we will uncover their timeless wisdom. Through short lectures, group discussions, and reflective readings, we will explore what wisdom these ancient texts offer for our challenging times as Americans. Join us in exploring these compact yet powerful books, each offering unique insights into faith, perseverance, love, and redemption. We will deepen our understanding and find relevance in these scriptures for our lives today. This study will nurture our faith and grow our community as we break open the scriptures together.
