Ash Wednesday

Worship Service

February 22, 6:00pm

Lent begins Wednesday, February 22, 2023, with our

Ash Wednesday Service of Imposition of Ashes.

Join us in the sanctuary at 6:00pm

We once again start our journey for the season of Lent. This is an opportunity for us to lay down the burdens that we have been carrying, and once again commit ourselves to trusting fully and completely in God.

We invite you to join us on this year's Lenten journey beginning with Ash Wednesday. We belong to God. And when we let God fill us, God's boundless grace and love overflows our hearts and our minds.

The Center for Faith and Imagination at Memphis Theological Seminary is hosting "A Time to Mourn". This is a service of lament, offering an opportunity for ministers and faith leaders to name and share our collective and individual grief in a sacred, supportive community. The service will include prayer, music, art, rituals of candle lighting, sharing tears, and more.

Please contact Dr. Martha Lyle Ford or Rev. Stephanie Patton for additional information about the event.

The Role of a Ruling Elder

As there were in Old Testament times elders for the government

of the people, so the New Testament church provided persons

with particular gifts to share in discernment of God's Spirit

and governance of God's people. Accordingly, congregations should

elect persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated

skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit.

Ruling elders...are chosen by the congregation to discern and

measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and

nurture its faith and life. Ruling elders, together with teaching

elders, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and

discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation

as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships.

When elected by the congregation, they shall serve faithfully

as members of the session. When elected as commissioners

to higher councils, ruling elders participate and vote with the

same authority as teaching elders, and they are eligible for any office.

Book of Order, G-2.0301

LENTEN DEVOTIONALS

from Presbyterian Outlook

Outlook Book Review editor Amy Pagliarella suggests resources for Lent 2023. All are available for order at a discount, and can shipped in 3-5 business days or they can be downloaded online at https://pres-outlook.org/2023/01/resources-for-lent-2023/.

A Just Passion:

A Six Week Lenten Journey

Contributions by Ruth Haley Barton, Sheila Wise Rowe, Tish Harrison Warren, and Terry M. Wildman

A Just Passion invites people of privilege to “explore what it means to love the justice of the Lord.” Short and sweet, this devotional includes a reading, breath prayer or poem for each day of Lent (minus Sundays), selected from earlier writings of IVP’s most insightful authors, and united by the theme of “examining and confessing our complicity in injustice.”

This does not, however, mean that the focus is on guilt or (even worse) shame; on the contrary, daily passages invite us to live with open hearts and hands to more fully experience God’s love. A Just Passion is flexible — some days include a simple prayer or excerpt from Scripture (from the poetic First Nations Version), while other entries ask questions and invite deeper personal reflection. This forgiving approach recognizes life’s demands, allowing readers to engage with the material in varied ways.

The Desert of Compassion: Devotions for the Lenten Journey

Rachel M. Srubas

Srubas invites readers to follow Jesus’ example, retreating for 40 days into the “desert” in order to emerge as more compassionate, hopeful humans who rely on God. This book of daily reflections invites transformation; by working through our wounds and repenting with open hearts, we realize that we are being sought by the God who “is seeking to transform (our) hurts and yearnings into (our) wholeness and fulfillment.”

The Season of Repentance and Renewal

Esau McCaulley

This slim book is best for those seeking a deeper academic and personal understanding of Lent, rather than (or in addition to) a daily devotional. McCaulley describes relevant spiritual practices including fasting, confession, engaging in social justice and more. Particularly interesting is the way he brings together his Baptist upbringing, current Episcopal tradition, and ancient church practices to suggest ways that we can deepen our own activities to draw nearer to God.

Lent could be read prior to Ash Wednesday or throughout Lent, as it does not follow a daily or weekly approach to the season. It would also find a welcome home in a church library and could be used to teach newcomers to the faith, confirmands, or others about this holy season.

NEWS from

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Johnson Auxiliary at Regional One (formerly the Med). Please join the Presbyterian Women in making plans to celebrate this milestone.

The Johnson Auxiliary was established in 1973 by a group of Presbyterian Women to address the needs of the John Gaston Memorial Hospital (later the Med, now Regional One Health). Regional One Health is the only designated Level I Trauma Center in a 150-mile radius and offers care to high-risk patients from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri.

Over the years, the Johnson Auxiliary volunteers have served the hospital in a number of ways. In 1981, the Johnson Auxiliary created a chapel/prayer room. This is a space used by all seeking a place to pray for their loved ones being cared for at the hospital. The chapel is in serious need of an update.

We are asking individuals, churches, and PW groups to join us in raising funds for this project and are targeting February and March for donations.

We thank you on behalf of the Johnson Auxiliary.
