Innate Immunity and Neurodegeneration: Challenges and Opportunities

Li Gan, Ph.D.

Director of the Helen and Robert Appel Alzheimer’s Disease Research Institute

Burton P. and Judith B. Resnick Distinguished Professor in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Weill Cornell Medicine, New York

Dr. Li Gan is the current director of the Helen and Robert Appel Alzheimer’s Disease Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medicine, where she also serves as the Burton P. and Judith B. Resnick Distinguished Professor in Neurodegenerative Diseases. Dr. Gan completed her doctoral studies in cellular and molecular physiology at Yale University School of Medicine, followed by postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School and the Gladstone Institutes at UCSF. She later held positions as a senior investigator and associate director at the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Diseases and as a Professor of Neurology at UCSF before joining Weill Cornell Medicine in 2018.

Dr. Gan's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of and therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, and Parkinson’s disease. She has been particularly influential in her studies of neuroimmune mechanisms and proteostasis in relation to neurodegeneration. Her team discovered tau acetylation, and has made significant contributions to the understanding of microglial mechanisms in disease progression. She has pioneered several scalable neural models using human iPSCs, unraveling novel disease-modifying pathways using functional genomics. Her work has led to several clinical trials targeting neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr. Gan has authored more than 100 publications in top-tier journals and has received prestigious awards, including the Glenn Award in Aging Research, the Inge Grundke-Iqbal Award for Alzheimer's Research from the Alzheimer’s association, the Helis Prize for Parkinson’s Disease research, and the Jessica M. and Natan Bibliowicz Award for Excellence in Mentoring Women Faculty. Dr. Gan leads several NIH-funded projects and maintains support from various philanthropic organizations. She is also an active contributor to the scientific community, serving on editorial boards and regularly reviews for top-tier journals and government grant agencies in the US and Europe.
