Wetlands Work
CWA project work at Butte Valley Wildlife Area is nearing completion for 2024, and the flood-up of previously enhanced habitat by CDFW staff has recently commenced.
Efforts for this large-scale enhancement include installing nearly 3 miles of new water delivery and recirculation pipelines, filling in deep drainage ditches, rebuilding porous levees, creating various meandering swale and pothole complexes within many existing units, constructing a 90+ acre semi-permanent wetland brood production unit, creating islands, replacing dilapidated water control infrastructure, and installing a second solar station to help offset pumping costs.
These construction endeavors, funded with help from the CA Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB), have focused on increasing water use efficiency, expanding brood-rearing opportunities, and enhancing wetland management capabilities to improve moist soil waterfowl forage production. Stay tuned for future updates.
