Parent Participation

We believe that a child's best advocate is their parent! This is why it is so important for parents to participate in their child's IEP meeting. Even IDEA includes the wording that schools "...shall take steps to ensure that one or both of the parents of a child with a disability are present at each IEP meeting..." To learn more about parent participation at IEP meetings, click HERE.

Ineffective communication can often lead to misunderstandings and the overuse/misuse of discipline which can result in students being funneled into the school-to-prison pipeline. Effective Communication is the first step to resolving conflict with your child's school. A Tale of Two Conversations is a two-part video, originally developed by the Pennsylvania Office for Dispute Resolution, showing actors playing a parent of a child with a disability and a school administrator. The meeting was requested by the parent and takes place in the administrator’s office. Take one shows the parent and administrator talking about the child’s special education program. They are talking, but not listening. Their communication is unproductive. Take two shows each person using more effective communication skills.

Resources for Military Families

School Support Services is dedicated to ensuring Army school-aged youth have the educational opportunities, resources, and information they need to succeed academically. The School Liaison Officer (SLO) bridges the gap between schools and families to foster student achievement.

How do SLOs support your family?

  • They help schools recognize the unique challenges military families face.
  • They keep parents informed about local school policies.
  • They offer details on local schools, graduation requirements, after-school programs, youth sponsorship, and homeschooling.
  • They foster partnerships between military units and schools.
  • They organize workshops to help parents navigate educational transitions and advocate for their children.
  • They provide a wealth of resources to enhance the school experience for military youth.

Educational Surrogate

Become an Educational Surrogate

An educational surrogate is an impartial individual who fills the role of parent for a student with a disability whenever decisions are being made about the student’s educational placement and individualized education program (IEP) when there is no biological parent or other adult authorized to make educational decisions on behalf of the student.
