Pastor Glen's focus for his message for

this upcoming weekend:

Plants are amazing. It’s not just the beauty on the surface, it’s the unseen roots that give them life and sustain them in hard times. So it is with faith. The promise of baptism is the foundation that holds us in grace and keeps us whatever may come. The Word does not come from us, but it shapes us and feeds us as we grow in faith and love every day.

2023 Kickoff Party is This Sunday!!!

Let’s get the Fall started off right! There has been so much talk about having more fellowship time at FLC. Here is the answer. On Sunday, August 27th, we will share a potluck lunch following the 10:15 service (about 11:30). The church will provide hotdogs and brats – bring a side dish to share. Come and reconnect as we launch into our fall ministry program.

· Worship

· Bag Blessing—for all the bags we take with us on our days away from home! Not Only for Kids!

· Presentation of Bibles to incoming 6th graders

· Pot Luck Meal and fellowship afterward

· Games for All

Women's Bible Study

The Friday Morning Women’s Bible Study will begin Season 2 of the series “The Chosen”. This study will combine the movie with eight sessions in a study guide. This Bible study meets on Friday mornings from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. in the Ark, which is in the lower level of First Lutheran. If interested in coming to this Bible study, contact Susie Pinquoch at (402) 426-8182 or spinquoch@gpcom.net.

The church office will be closed Monday, September 4th

Lutheran Disaster Relief Donations for Hawaii

If you would like to make a donation to help victims of the wildfires in Hawaii, one of the best options is Lutheran Disaster Relief. Every dollar goes directly to aid victims, and LDS is already there and will be there long after other relief agencies leave. Go to elca.org and click on the banner to Give Now to Wildfire Relief. You an also put a check in the offering at church and we can forward

it through the synod.

In the next several months it is our goal to educate the congregation on the

activities of the Committees at First Lutheran. We will plan to highlight the

activities of one of these committees each month. In doing this we will plan two separate activities for each committee. These include:

1. A presentation by the committee chair person or representative of the

committee to the Church Council regarding the committee’s activities. This

would include the goals of the committee, who makes up the committee,

what some of the activities of committee are, and how the Church Council

could assist the committee in their work.

2. Following the presentation to the Council, a short summary of the

committee’s activities will be included in the weekly E-Blasts sent to the

congregation.

The goal of this summary again will be to highlight the activities of the committee and hopefully increase the interest in the committees by the congregation and possibly help In the recruitment of the members to the committees.

Social Concerns Committee:

With school starting soon it is time for our annual BACKPACK PROMOTION--a fundraiser which supports the FOODBANK for the HEARTLAND--the organization which supplies packs filled with healthy food to take home for the weekend for chronically hungry elementary and middle school children in Blair. Look for the exhibit which will be in the narthex starting on Saturday, August 5 and through the month of August that will demonstrate what is included in these back packs. We handed out flyers at the worship services on August 5 and 6 which will provide you with more information on ways to contribute to this worthy cause. One way in which you can do this is to send your contributions to Foodbank for the Heartland: Attn: Backpack Program, 10525 J Street, Omaha, NE 68127.

FLC will be staffing the WASHINGTON COUNTY RECYCLING CENTER on Saturday, August 26. Sign-up sheets for volunteers will be available on August 5 and following  at the Welcome Center.  You may sign up for the whole morning or for 2 hours--8:00 to l0:00 A.M. or 10:00 A.M. to Noon. This offers us an opportunity to be good stewards of our environment. And a huge thank you goes to all FLC members who staff the Recycling Center every week!

Our SUMMER GARDEN MARKET is now OPEN!  You are invited to share your excess garden produce, your flowers, and your baked goods! Please give generously for what you purchase, as proceeds will go to ELCA WORLD HUNGER. Produce may be brought to the church and placed on the Garden Cart in the narthex any time when the church is open--preferably prior to 3:00 P.M. on Fridays and between 4:00 and 7:00 P.M. on Saturdays.

Communion Update:

Thank you for helping with this accommodation for Pastor Glen: because it is difficult for Pastor to bring communion to members in the pews, if you find it physically difficult to come forward during communion, we invite you to pick up the communion elements as you come into the Sanctuary and receive them during the communion liturgy when the Pastor indicates.
