Third Quarter 2024

DONOR INSIGHTS

YVCF 2023

Annual Report

2023 was an exciting and important year for the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. Through our crisis funding efforts we significantly supported several local organizations experiencing sudden and unbudgeted needs (see story below regarding the Bilingual Family Liaison position for SSSD); launched an Impact Investment Program to leverage our assets toward financing community needs; and moved into our new headquarters at 4th & Oak in downtown Steamboat. Our total assets are at a new high but, more importantly, our ability to support local nonprofits and serve philanthropic interests continues to grow.

We invite you to read our 2023 Annual Report and celebrate our collective successes last year. Thank you for trusting us as your partner in this life-long endeavor.

YVCF Giving Circles Provide Support for our Neighbors in Need

A giving circle is a group of passionate people who come together, pooling tax-deductible donations and granting the funds into the community where they can have a meaningful impact. YVCF manages three giving circle programs: Women's Giving Circle, WZ Giving Circle and IMPACT100. We are always happy to welcome new members to our giving circles!

WOMEN'S GIVING CIRCLE

Members of the Women's Giving Circle donate a minimum of $250 per year, and a committee reviews requests of up to $3000 on an ongoing basis, year-round, to assist people in crisis with needs for which there is no other funding available. So far in 2024, the Women's Giving Circle has funded 41 proposals, totaling over $60,000 in assistance to community members in need. This circle gathers for social happy hours and educational presentations from local nonprofits a couple times each year.

WZ GIVING CIRCLE

The WZ Giving Circle meets at least twice per year and hears presentations from nonprofit case workers on behalf of their clients in crisis with requests of up to $5,000 for needs for which no other funding exists. The circle then collectively decides on funding. Members donate a minimum of $2500 per year. In 2024, 23 proposals have been funded to 9 organizations, totaling over $78,000 in direct assistance for our neighbors in need.

Giving circles are a great way to provide assistance directly to individuals in need (who remain anonymous to circle members), meet other like-minded people, become more involved in local philanthropy and learn about the nonprofits serving our community. Urgent Need Funding Success Story-

SSSD Bilingual Family Liasion

An important function that YVCF provides in the community is nimble fundraising and responsive grantmaking to meet urgent needs in the community.

This spring YVCF was contacted by the Steamboat Springs School District with a need to secure funding for the district's bilingual family liaison position. This position was created for the 2023-2024 school year through a one-year grant from CDPHE, with funding concluding in May 2024.

The Family liaison position aims to support families, enhance communication between schools and families, and support students. The general goals of the Family Liaison position are:

  • Improving family engagement with the school;
  • Facilitating effective communication between the school and the parents;
  • Collaborating effectively with school staff;
  • Connecting families with community resources and services;
  • Educating families to advocate for themselves and their children.

Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, four Parent Engagement Nights were hosted for immigrant and newcomer families, with a typical attendance of 40 families, assisting with critical needs such as getting families signed up with medical insurance. The Family Liaison began conducting Home Visits to build relationships with immigrant families and learn more about their needs, while also welcoming new students and assisting them with the enrollment process.

The outcomes of this position for the first year were overwhelmingly positive, and the district was in search of funding to continue the position through the summer and 2024-2025 school year, while they research long-term sustainable funding. Through direct outreach and the generosity of donors who have a passion for education and equity, YVCF was able to raise the $65,000 needed in order to ensure the Bilingual Family Liasion position would continue without any disruption in services to families.

If you are interested in being notified when urgent nonprofit or community needs arise, or in providing this kind of support, please contact Traci Hiatt at traci@yvcf.org or (970) 879-8632.
