A patient in critical condition refuses treatment, adamant that she be allowed to leave the hospital, even against medical advice. Enter Claudia Sotomayor, MD, DBE, chief of the Ethics Consultation Service at the Edmund D. Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics. For more than 50 years, Georgetown has pioneered the development of an ethical framework to guide practitioners in resolving complex questions.
The Fund a Fellow Program, which began in 2013, provides funding to train early-career neurologists as movement disorders specialists. After a two-year fellowship focused on movement and memory disorders and conducting clinical trials, they are better able to diagnose patients and provide access to the latest treatments available.
Women, trans and nonbinary persons, members of racial and ethnic minority groups, people with disabilities and people from disadvantaged economic backgrounds pursuing careers in science don’t always have the same opportunities for academic or professional growth as their peers. That is why the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience (IPN) prioritizes promoting diversity and inclusion in neuroscience, and has steadily increased its recruitment and enrollment of people who are historically underrepresented in science.
Awards and Achievements
The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) honored Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, PMHCNS, ANEF, FAAN, dean of the School of Nursing, with the NBNA Lifetime Achievement Award for her “lasting impact” on nursing during the 51st NBNA Annual Institute and Conference Awards Ceremony in Atlanta on August 5.
Erica E. Coates, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, has been named the first GHUCCTS KL2 Scholar in their highly competitive 2023 cycle. In that role, she will complete a strengths-based, translational research project, Racial Socialization and Racial Identity as Moderators in the Relationship Between Parents’ and Children’s Exposure to Racism and Children’s Mental Health.
Catherine Horvath, DNP, CRNA, CHSE, CNEA, associate professor and assistant program director of the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice program, was inducted into the Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA), a group of individuals recognized for being outstanding practitioners, educators, researchers and advocates.

Building D to Garage 2 Awning Demolition Starts August 21
From August 21 through August 23, Georgetown University will demolish the awning over the walkway that extends from Building D to Garage 2 and the P1 elevator lobby. The demolition will not include the awning over the Building D entrance. During this time, there will be no access to the P1 elevator level. All pedestrians are asked to exit and enter Garage 2 on Level P5, using the crosswalk and stairs. Signs will be in place to direct pedestrians to exit and enter on Level P5.
