This month the SSC is proud to highlight the OU School of Library and Information Studies Study Abroad program within the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. Keep reading to learn more about this exciting opportunity.
The School of Library and Information Studies was founded in 1929 and offers the only ALA-accredited LIS program in Oklahoma. This year was the inaugural program for the School of Library and Information Studies Study Abroad, OU in Italy: Libraries, Archives, and Museums. Participating students and faculty traveled to sites such as the Colosseum, Pantheon, Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums in Rome. They also visited the Arezzo Public Library which is 800 years old and serves as both a public library and an archive, the Duomo Museum in Florence and Siena.
According to SLIS faculty, Dr. Buffy Edwards, "studying abroad helps students learn more about themselves, further develop cultural awareness and competence, make life-long friends and experience authentic learning in live labs and living the culture."
Studying abroad can be life changing. As reflected in these powerful words from a participating student:
"This day was a moment of growth for me. I saw myself in photos and didn't cringe away instantly. I found beauty in myself and felt at peace in my body. I knew this trip would be a test of my physical limits and bringing myself back to physical health thanks to activity. I didn't think it would be a way to find my beauty again." ~ S. Sorenson (SLIS Study Abroad 2023)
SLIS will be offering OU in Italy: Libraries, Archives, and Museums in summer 2024 with hopes to add additional libraries and archives, hands-on projects in libraries and archives, and a visit to the world-famous restoration lab in Florence, the European Centre for Restoration.
Students interested in learning more about the 2024 study abroad can contact Dr. Buffy Edwards (buffy@ou.edu), faculty lead, or Kaydee Dyer (kaydee.dyer@ou.edu), assistant director of operations, Education Abroad.
