THE MID-WEEK BUZZ

Happy Thursday, Church!

We hope your mid-week is looking good!

If you were with us last Sunday, you know that our beloved Pastor is taking a medical leave, to complete the last half of his cancer treatment.

He is not in pain, but is experiencing many challenges and exhaustion caused by the radiation.

So with God's help, we, the church, will do our best to meet any needs and questions you may have.

Please direct any prayer requests to the church office, Office1@ccpucc.org. Vicki Holland will receive those requests and communicate with you. If you have Pastoral care needs, please let us know using Office1@ccpucc.org, or call the church office at 858-748-3304.

We will continue to worship as always at 9:15 Sunday morning, welcoming some new faces, and some familiar, as we continue to glorify God, and be grateful for all the gifts and love we have been given.

Thank you for your support, while we pray for Pastor Greg's healing and recovery.

7 words for worship (pt. 1)

In the Hebrew language there a number of words that are often translated as worship. I thought maybe we’d look at each of these over the next month or two. Probably the most common word Hebrew word translated as worship or even more often praise in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) is Hallel. You might recognize it as the root word for the phrase we often use in songs “hallelujah” which, at its most basic means “praise to Yahweh/God.” The word praise takes on a number of different nuances "to be clear, to praise, to shine, to boast, show, to rave, celebrate, to be clamorously foolish." Think of these words in terms of our worship: our worship makes known God’s name, it shines God forth to the world, boasts in God, etc. Here are a few passages where this phrase is used to give you some examples.

Psalm 113:1-3 Praise (hallal) ye the Lord, praise (hallal) o ye servants of the Lord, praise (hallal) the name of the Lord.

Psalm 150:1 Praise (hallal) the Lord! Praise (hallal) God in His sanctuary; Praise (hallal) Him in His mighty expanse.

Psalm 149:3 Let them praise (hallal) His name in the dance: let them sing praises with the timbrel and harp.

New Member Informational Gathering

September 8, 2024

Hey Church, it is time again to welcome new members into our beloved community. On Sunday, September 8th, I will offer a short, new member information gathering following worship in the Fireside Room. We will discuss a bit of the history of the United Church of Christ, The values and procedures of the Community Church of Poway, and what membership means in our congregation. There is no pressure in our congregation to be a member, everyone is accepted as full participants in our church. Membership gives you the privilege of voting on big issues. All new members will be welcomed on Sunday, September 15th during our worship hour. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact either Pastor Greg or Vicki in the church office.

Books & More

We will be reading Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus starting on Tuesday, August 27.

This novel is laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist-Meet Elizabeth Zott: “a gifted research chemist, absurdly self-assured and immune to social convention” and is not your average woman. In fact, she would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman.

#1 GLOBAL BESTSELLER AND A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, Oprah Daily, Entertainment Weekly, and Newsweek.

Books and More meets every Tuesday at 10:00am in the Fireside Room.

All are welcome to join us.
