A Note From Dean Jermyn

This October has been a time of connection, growth, and service. Through community events, volunteer efforts, and individual achievements, our students, faculty, and alumni continue to embody the values of learning, collaboration, and compassionate care.

Your dedication strengthens our mission and makes a lasting impact, both within Rowan-Virtua SOM and in the broader community. Thank you for your hard work, and I look forward to the opportunities and milestones we’ll reach together in the months ahead.

My best regards,

Richard T. Jermyn, D.O.

Stephanie Levin Releases New Book on Visual Impairments

Stephanie A.N. Levin, B.S., MBA, a management assistant in Student Affairs at Rowan-Virtua SOM and a doctoral candidate at Rowan University’s College of Education, recently celebrated the release of her new book, Picking Up the Pieces

Drawing from personal experience, Levin explores the challenges and traumas faced by students with visual impairments, offering insights on how to overcome these barriers. Her work sheds light on the need for greater support and understanding for students with disabilities.

Drive for Scholarship

On Sunday, September 29, Rowan-Virtua SOM held the annual DRIVE for Scholarship golf outing at Topgolf in Mount Laurel. More than 100 alumni, student doctors, faculty, and friends enjoyed perfect weather and great company. The event would not have been possible without the support of dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors, including Inspira Health, the SOM Dean’s Office, the Department of Psychiatry, and MMC Family Medicine. Thank you to all who participated in raising more than $15,000 for the Alumni Association’s student scholarship fund!

Breast Health Workshop

On Wednesday, October 23, the Association of Women Surgeons, the American Medical Women’s Association and the OB-GYN Society co-hosted a Breast Health Workshop in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event began with a keynote address by Alumni Association Board Member Kay Yoon-Flannery, D.O., ’11, followed by workshops on ultrasound-guided breast biopsy simulation, breast ultrasound simulation, breast exam and palpation, and breast health/breast cancer trivia.

A special thank you to Mammotome, Esaote, Butterfly and the Rowan-Virtua SOM Simulation Center for their generous support of the program with ultrasound machines and biopsy instruments.

All Stars

Twenty All Stars and 24 student doctor volunteers attended the October session of the All-Star Youth Sports Clinic, enjoying a Glow Mini Golf setup in the Multipurpose Room and treats from Kona Ice. Next month’s session will be a special event at the Eagles Autism Foundation All Abilities Clinic!

Led by Sabrina Paparo and Jessica Mitchell, both second-year medical students, the All-Star Youth Sports Clinic provides children ages six to 15 with a supportive, non-competitive environment to play sports and engage with student doctors in a non-clinical setting. The clinic, which is free for families in the community, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and still has openings. For more information, email rowanallstarssportsclinic@gmail.com.

Pet Therapy

Dr. Barry Hoffman and his wife, Barbara Hoffman, brought their certified therapy dogs to comfort students, faculty, and staff on October 7. Look for the Hoffman family when they return on November 11!

Joanna Petrides, MBS, Psy.D. from the Departments of Family Medicine and Psychology and chair of the Rowan-Virtua SOM Wellness Committee, shares this month’s tip for improving wellbeing.

Practice Gratitude: Fall is a season of gratitude and reflection. Encourage your team to practice gratitude by sharing what they are thankful for during team meetings or through a gratitude journal. Cultivating gratitude can improve mental well-being and foster a positive work environment.
