Apply Now for the 2023 ACTA Apprenticeship Program
Now offering $5,000 contracts!
The Apprenticeship Program encourages the continuity of the state’s thriving traditional arts and cultures by contracting California-based mentor artists to offer intensive, one-on-one training training to eligible apprentices.
Each $5,000 contract will support a period of concentrated learning, from 6 months to a year, for apprentices who demonstrate a committed engagement with, and a talent for, a specific traditional art form or cultural practice.
The 2023 cycle will support activities taking place between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024.

2023 NEA National Heritage Fellows!
Join us in celebrating the 2023 National Heritage Fellows, our nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts from the National Endowment for the Arts! A hearty congratulations to the nine masterful culture bearers who now join the community of NEA Heritage Fellows, in particular, Wu Man, a master-level Pipa player from Carlsbad, California in San Diego County.
Wu Man’s vivid brilliance, commanding personality, and range of expression has redefined the pipa—a centuries-old, pear-shaped, four-stringed Chinese lute—bringing it to new audiences both in the United States and the wider world of music.

Welcoming César Castro, ACTA's New Program Coordinator
Le damos la bienvenida a César Castro, nuevo coordinador de programas de ACTA
César Castro comes to ACTA as a Program Coordinator for Reentry Through the Arts and La Cultura Cura and is responsible for supporting the coordination of weekly traditional arts workshops both online and in person for these programs. César has engaged with ACTA’s various programs as an artist collaborator for many years, including as a teaching artist in the Arts in Corrections program. He is a professional musician in the Son Jarocho genre, a luthier (stringed instrument maker) and an instructor.
César Castro llega a ACTA como coordinador de programas de Reinserción a Través de las Artes y La Cultura Cura y es responsable de apoyar con la coordinación de talleres semanales de artes tradicionales en línea y en persona para estos programas.César se ha comprometido con los diversos programas de ACTA como artista colaborador durante muchos años, incluso como artista docente en el programa Artes en la Correccionales. César es un músico profesional en el género Son Jarocho, un laudero (fabricante de instrumentos de cuerda) y un instructor.

Tending the Taproot: Opportunities to Support Folk & Traditional Arts in the United States presents the findings of the Alliance of California Traditional Arts’ (ACTA) Taproot Initiative. This national planning effort, aimed to re-center traditional and folk artists and their art forms as catalysts for transformation and restoration in our larger society, is aligned with other important movements in the arts and culture sector to spur critical thinking and action during this hallmark moment of radical change.

ACTA's California Traditional Artists Plaza facilitates engagement with artists by foregrounding work-for-hire opportunities that will positively impact the livelihoods of traditional artists. During the Covid-19 pandemic, ACTA saw a need to build out a new tool to increase opportunities not just for sharing information, but for hiring traditional artists for both remote and in-person engagements, recognizing their work as critical to the economic recovery of the California arts sector.
The California Traditional Artists Plaza creates a new, centralized space for traditional artists to advertise their work and create new connections online.

The Native Cultures Fund supports artists, culture bearers, and educators from the Tolowa/Dee-ni’ Nation peoples near the Oregon border, inland to the Paiute and Shoshone Nations along the Nevada border, and south to the Chumash peoples of the Santa Barbara area. NCF grant funding is between $1,000 and $10,000, with most grants falling between $1,000 - $5,000.
The Creative Work Fund invites artists and nonprofit organizations to apply for grants to create art works through collaborations. In October 2023, CWF will award approximately $650,000 in grants to Bay Area nonprofit organizations and collaborating artists. All genres invited. Grants will range from $20,000 to $50,000
Join Californians for the Arts and Create CA for the inaugural CA Arts & Culture Summit in Sacramento on Monday, April 17. The Summit will take place during California’s 5th Annual Arts, Culture & Creativity Month. The Summit will unite arts and civic leaders for two days of events filled with knowledge-sharing, coalition building, and movement visioning.
