DUO Reminders

1) ONLY approve DUO requests that YOU have initiated.

** Specifically, look at the location. If you did not initiate the request select the red X to deny access to your account and immediately change your FGCU email password.

2) Stop and look for the signs of a suspicious email!

3) Set up 2-step verification on any of your personal email accounts.

Phishing Emails Appearing to Come from the University

Phishing picture with a fishing hook through a keyboard key.

Phishing attempts are on the rise. Information Technology Services (ITS) wants to remind everyone to stay safe and be on the lookout for potential phishing emails, especially as the holidays approach.

The latest emails have the following subject lines:

  • GRANT APPROVED informing you that your 2024 student benefit check has been approved
  • FGCU EMERGENCY ALERT informing you that your account will stop processing emails
  • LAST WARNING TO ALL FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND STAFF also informing you that your account will stop processing emails
  • FGCU APPROVED REMOTE WORK claiming to offer remote job positions with “flexible hours”
  • MICROSOFT ACCOUNT EXPIRATION NOTICE claiming that your account will expire and no longer have access to your Microsoft systems

These emails make it appear to come from the Help Desk or someone from the University. This is not an email from the University Help Desk, and you should not click on any links or reply to these types of emails. Simply delete that email. See below for more tips.

Threat level: While FGCU has email filtering, and advanced message protection solutions in place, sometimes malicious emails can still make it to your inbox. We urge you to be extra careful when opening emails from people you have never interacted with or are not expecting an email from.

Protect yourself: To better protect yourself, know/do the following:

  • FGCU will never ask for your password for any of your accounts
  • FGCU will never ask for your social security number
  • Never accept DUO authentication requests that you did not initiate
  • Never share your FGCU password with anyone

Think you’ve been impacted? If you think you’ve accidentally responded to a phishing email, contact the University Help Desk immediately and review the What to Do If Hacked or Suspect You Were Knowledge Base article for additional safeguards.
