McCaskill Family Services Newsletter

Term: Fall| Issue 58| October 30th, 2024

October is more than just a time for pumpkins and candy, it's also Dyslexia and ADHD awareness month!

Did you know that when left untreated ADHD and Dyslexia can lead to other mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, school drop out or unemployment. Unfortunately, ADHD and Dyslexia often go unnoticed since many individuals who are struggling with other mental health disorders don't realize that the chronic stress of these conditions could be the root of the problem. What's the main point here? Receiving a proper diagnoses is important.

Think about it this way: When you need a directory to help you navigate, there has to be a "You are here" mark in order to orient yourself. Why? Because without knowing where you are, you can't know where you need to go or the most effective path to take to get there. Think of a diagnosis the same way.

Dr. John McCaskill is a leading expert when it comes to diagnosing Dyslexia. With over 25 years of experience, he knows a thing or two about Learning Disabilities. Click below to read his article about the Top Ten Early Warning Signs for Dyslexia.

ADHD & Dyslexia Evaluations

ADHD and Dyslexia are often comorbid, meaning that many people whom have one, may have the other. Misdiagnosis of these disorders are often common in young children, gifted individuals, and those struggling with social and emotional problems. It's never too early or too late to seek testing and intervention.
At MFS we specialize in comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations that can put the puzzle pieces together and provide you and your family with clarity, while getting you started on the road to successful intervention.

Food For Thought

A monthly newsletter addition from our Dietitian and Eating Disorder Recovery Team.

Halloween: a time of tricks, treats, chilly weather, and costumes. However you partake in the festivities, wearing a Halloween costume can be a fun opportunity to be someone else for a night, whether that be a fictional character, movie star, or a different person altogether. Dressing up can be so fun!

Sometimes, however, we may find ourselves wearing another type of “costume” when we try to hide or change our true selves. This may be to please others, because there’s parts of ourselves that we don’t like- the list can go on. This type of dressing up isn’t so fun and may even cause harm if we choose to do things like restrict what we’re eating, feel guilty after eating certain foods, exercise excessively, and even spend time with people who don’t make us feel good about ourselves.

Embracing our true selves can be hard, but there are tools that can help you take off this not-so-fun costume. Our multidisciplinary Eating Disorder Treatment Team is experienced in treating concerns related to body image, self-esteem, disordered eating, and compensatory exercise.. If you’re interested, you can contact our office to book an appointment with one of our therapists or dietitian. We have immediate availability in person and virtually and we work with individuals of all ages and genders.
