Thorold Multimodal Hub

Train and crane

In partnership with Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA), the former Resolute paper mill, purchased by Bioveld Canada in 2020, has become what is now known as the Thorold Multimodal Hub

Since then, Bioveld and HOPA have worked with the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Company to dredge the Moore McClearly dock wall to accommodate the loading and unloading of ships. They have also signed agreements with GIO Rail to reactivate the rail lines that serve the rail spurs at the hub. In Dec. 2022, it was announced that Bioveld has also purchased the former Hayes Dana property and that it would be an expansion to the Thorold Multimodal Hub.

The combination of these two properties has created access to nearly 400 acres and 1 million square feet of industrial space to companies wanting to invest in Thorold.

Thorold is strategically located on the periphery of the Greater Toronto Area, the sixth largest metropolitan area in North America, and is a unique location for companies that serve both Canadian and American markets. The Niagara region is situated along the QEW corridor that connects Ontario to the western United States with Fort Erie's Peace Bridge Canada’s second busiest truck crossing.

Thorold is ready to benefit from its location, access to multimodal infrastructure, and availability serviced industrial lands.

In Jan. 2021, Tora Inc. needed room to grow and saw the newly available 60,000 square-foot space as a reason to relocate to the hub. And in Dec. 2022, EVSX, a lithium-ion battery recycler, announced that it would be moving into the hub, giving them proper access to multimodal infrastructure and positioning them to play an important role in the burgeoning electric vehicle supply chain.

Companies are seeing the benefit of relocating to the Thorold Multimodal Hub. However, there is still a lot of work to be done, including upgrading older buildings to bring them up to industrial standards. One thing is certain, though – Bioveld and HOPA are committed to Thorold. The time of these properties sitting vacant and underutilized is over. It is only a matter of time before the city will experience the benefits of a revitalized industrial sector that will lead to new business – and its employees – calling the city of Thorold home.
