Tips for Writing a Great Investment Policy

For schools who have an endowment, a comprehensive and well thought out investment policy statement (IPS) is critical. Today I share with you a resource, "Non-profits: 13 Elements to Writing a Great Investment Policy" by Russell Investments. "The IPS fills a vital role in helping lay the foundation of an organization's overall governance structure and ensuring that all fiduciaries are fulfilling their obligations."

This guide indicates that the following 13 items should be included in your IPS. Each of these is described in the full article:

Purpose and scope

Definition of duties

Objectives and circumstances

Strategic asset allocation framework

Rebalancing

Liquidity policy

Spending policy

Risk management

Responsible investing

Unique circumstances

Monitoring and review process

Acknowledgement

Appendix: Asset role strategy statements
