THIS WEEK'S NEWS

TONIGHT! Maundy Thursday, April 17

"Come to the Table" Worship and Reflection - 6:00-8:00 PM

The word “Maundy,” derived from the Latin “mandatum” meaning “commandment,” refers to John 13:34: “A new command I give you: Love one another.” Jesus spoke these words at the Last Supper just prior to his arrest. It was the last evening the disciples would spend with Jesus. It was at this table where they received the command to love, were shocked by having their feet washed by their Lord and King, and where Jesus predicted their betrayal.

This Thursday evening we are trying something new! Instead of a traditional worship service, worship stations will be set up throughout the church that you can visit at your own pace, in whichever order you choose. Each station has an activity that gives an opportunity to reflect on the hours leading up to Jesus' crucifixion:

Sanctuary--Taize Worship and The Lord's Supper--Listen to music, pray, and receive communion.

Fellowship Hall--Labyrinth--Experience a prayer tool used by many religious traditions throughout the world. Meditate on a passage of scripture or a question as you follow the labyrinth's path.

Skylight Room--The Cross--Reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus while reading scripture and focusing your attention on a large cross. Pray over a cloth and hang it on the cross.

Room 1--Prayer Collage--Get creative and design a collage (or write a journal entry or poem or ...?) with images that symbolize the last days and experience of Jesus OR whatever resonates with you in the moment.

Chapel--Stations of the Cross--Spend time with a series of images that depict Christ's journey to the cross. Reflection questions and prayers are provided.

We hope you will encounter Jesus, our living Lord, who invites you to spend an evening around the Table: reflecting, listening, joining, loving.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study:

Fakers, Faith, Freedom, Fruit: Core Messages from the book of Galatians

The apostle Paul doesn’t mince words in his letter to the church he founded in Galatia. Theological, spiritual, and communal challenges threaten the health and vitality of the community. Paul writes to remind them of the essential message of the Gospel, a message they have been tempted to dilute or abandon. He offers four core teachings to guide the believers in Galatia back to the heart of the Gospel. Join us this spring as we explore each of these core teachings. Together we’ll discover the ways Paul’s passionate and direct words keep us rooted in the Good News of Jesus. Class meets every Wednesday at 9:30 AM in the Skylight Room April 23 - May 28.

Connect your hearing aid to our HEARING LOOP or ask for a hearing assistance device at the sound booth in the back of the sanctuary.

Ear plugs are also available at the sound booth in the back of the sanctuary.

NEXT SUNDAY: Guatemalan Fundraiser Breakfast 4/27

A free-will donation for our famous Guatemalan breakfast, to support our team going to Guatemala in August. Sunday, 4/27 at 10:45 AM in the fellowship hall.

Volunteers Needed for St. Ann’s Lunch on 5/4 Please

For over 40 years, St. Ann's Catholic Church in the East Central neighborhood has provided a weekly lunch for people in need. Seven groups rotate the cooking and serving. Hamblen has partnered with Spokane Valley United Methodist to provide lunch every seven weeks at 1pm. What Hamblen needs is two volunteers from 10:00-2pm on May 4th to cook/serve/cleanup at 2120 E. First Ave. We also provide six dozen desserts (cookies, cupcakes, brownies, etc.), so we'd like 3 volunteers to deliver 2 dozen treats each. Call Dia with questions: 509-389-9858. Sign up here: https://bit.ly/StAnnsSundayLunch

No Child Should Go Hungry…

We are still funding and delivering Bite2Go kits for children at Hamblen Elementary and also delivering to Liberty Park. Donations may be made to HPPC with “Bite2Go” in the memo line. Delivery drivers may sign up through the links below. Thank you for your care of this important ministry.

Shirts and Shorts for Liberty Park Community Development Preschool

Again, we will support the Liberty Park Community Development Preschool by giving a shirt and short set for each child. What a wonderful end of the year treat for the kids! This year they have 52 children enrolled in preschool.

Here are the details:

  • Choose a specific size and gender by picking up a tagged bag in the narthex OR sign up online through this link: https://bit.ly/ShirtsandShorts2025
  • Place your shirt & short combo in the provided zip lock bag. (If signing up via Sign Up Genius, place your combo in a gallon bag and label it with the size and gender you purchased.)
  • Drop it in the bin in the narthex no later than Sunday, May 4.

A monetary donation is another way to support this program. Any shirts & shorts not donated, will be purchased to ensure that no child goes without. Checks can be made payable to HPPC, with "Shirts and Shorts" written in the memo line. Your commitment and participation helps put a smile on the faces of these children. Thank you!

Emergency Needs Team Looking for Volunteers!

Sometimes people in our congregation need a meal or a ride to an appointment. Our volunteer call list hasn't been updated in quite a while. If you would like to help occasionally in this way, contact Chelsea Bryant, at chelseabryant@outlook.com and she will put you on the list to call. You can always say no if the timing for a specific ask doesn't work for you!

New to Hamblen? Welcome!

The pastors would love the opportunity to get to know you over coffee! Later this spring we will hold a newcomer welcoming session where you can meet more people from our congregation and learn more about Hamblen Church. If you are interested in more information about getting involved in activities, becoming a member, or want to indicate your interest in our upcoming newcomer welcoming session, please contact the church office at 509-385-0619 or email hppc@hamblenpres.org.
